Poetry for Young People: Carl Sandburg (Volume 4) Paperback – April 1, 2008

I teach 5th grade and have been looking for poetry with deeper meanings that is not too old-fashioned OR just fun and silly and this is it. I have over 50% ELLs and I'm pretty sure that the kids will be able to read this independently and understand with some scaffolding. Some of the stories students will be able to relate to as well- Little Girl, which discusses the power of words. There are ones about clouds, summer, pumpkins, and sheep. There are definitely higher level ones with high vocabulary for TAG and middle school students. I will use about 2/3rds of the poems so this was a good buy.

Wonderful introduction to poetry for young people and makes for worthwhile summer reading. Purchased along with Poetry for Young People: Walt Whitman, The Underground Railroad by Raymond Bial, and Poetry for Young People: Robert Frost. Our local library doesn't carry much in the way of poetry for children and the small price for these priceless books is more than worth the cost.

The art was excellent and the poetry presented in easy to read format. My grandson and I donated one copy to his school library for Poetry Month and also bought one for the house.

This is a great book for adults too.

Good selection and inviting illustrations. My daughter likes the books in this series.

This is a great introduction to American poetry for your kids. It is more modern, and many of the poems describe cities and children. But the images that stay the longest (for us) are of the fall and winter trees (one nicely illustrated for the cover).Great illustrations accompany these poems. Do not hesitate to get this one.

Nice collection of poems, however, like many in the Poetry for Young People series, some poems are presented only in part.
