I love this movie
If you want a portrayal of the book, you’re better off watching the 1960s version. I happen to love this 90s version. It was shown to my 7th grade class after we read the book. Due to my age, I identified more strongly with these teenage characters than if they had been young children. From my 13-year-old, female perspective, I could immediately see my male classmates willingly devolve into anarchy after a few weeks without clean laundry. Yes, the kids swear exactly like real teenage boys swear. If we could watch it in school in the 90s, how bad could it be?The characters and their symbolism are mostly still intact. Ralph, the “adult” of the group with a high moral compass, desperately wants to set up a democratic micro civilization. Jack is the hunter and protector from the monster, able to pull the boys into his bloodthirsty tribe where he rules as dictator. Roger is a sociopath with dead eyes whose quiet presence is kind of creepy. Simon is quiet and stares at things. The only drawback is Piggy, who in the book is supposed to be the intelligent voice of reason. It’s lost here because the kid who plays him is extremely irritating to the point where you’re grateful for Roger’s large rock.I was happy to buy this movie after not seeing it since the mid-90s. It would have held up better had they not insisted on putting a timestamp on it (they talk about the 80s tv show “ALF”) and the picture quality looks like VHS, but it’s still good. I could see it being remade again. Anarchist kids are always interesting.

A jungle in color! Fine for classroom with permission.
Compared to the black and white one, this one is far less faithful to the book, but students prefer it because it is in color, the kids are American, and the kids are more believably harsh to each other. I do not show this one until AFTER we have taken our test on the book, and I NEVER show it without written parental consent from a critical mass of students. Even still, I am usually scrambling to find homes for the sizeable handful that do not return their permission slips. This is the ONLY rated-R movie I would ever attempt to show my students. It is rated R for cussing, the scenes in which Simon and Piggy leave the story (subtle gore), and a scene in which the boys remove the head from a pig carcass. The cussing is not excessive, though, and does not detract from the story.Students may need explanation on a couple of points. First, who are these kids in the movie? If there is a JROTC at your local high school, most students will understand if you compare the boys' somewhat military background to that. One of my JROTC cadets was even able to tell me the ranks of all the boys, and what all their uniform cords meant! Second, there is a reference to "Alf" when the kids are wondering what is on TV. It's too bad they couldn't have made it The Simpsons or The Addams Family or Batman or Transformers or something that everyone would still know. "Alf" was a puppet character from outer space living with an American family, or at least I think--I never watched the show. All in all, this one is worth showing if you can get permission.

How Deep Are Our Civilized Values?
An interesting and well written book worth the time of reading. Although somewhat dated, it still is thought provoking. It centers on a group of English schoolboys stranded on an uninhabited island, forced to come to terms with organizing for their survival. The upbringing, training, status and personalities of the boys are explored as they form two opposing groups when the niceties of civilization wear thin. The reader is inevitably led to think how his or her own background and personality would react in such a crisis. How deeply ingrained are our values and beliefs, what would we sacrifice for survival and similar questions come to mind. This is a book which should not be allowed to fade into obscurity!

Good but the original is better.
This version was made in 1990 nearly 30 years after the black and white original directed by Peter Brook. This is in colour but it comes over glossy, not gritty, which was key to the filming of the original with all its naivety, twee English accents and beautiful monochrome photography, and of course the premise of a bunch of kids turning into savages when stranded on a deserted island without adult supervision, rules or deterrent.Somehow you would expect kids to behave this way if this happened today, maybe, but back in the 1960's the behaviour of youngsters as shown in William Golding's book and in the Brook film stirred uncomfortable emotions questioning our preconceived beliefs of who we are.My privilege to have read the book for my GCE course when i was a teenager, and a bonus was to be taken to London's West End to see the original film, around 1964. That film fitted the book like a glove. This 1990 version, very Americanized, leaves much to be desired perhaps because there have been one or two plot changes from the novel.English language and subtitles, plus multiple other languages and subs. Very user friendly.

variation on an original story
I thought when this film was released that I possibly would not like it. However although the location of the boys was that they were American and not as the first film, an original British story; both were set on an island and each film was perfectly done and followed the harrowing story of human frailty and a gradual savage deterioration of the boys stranded there.A very believable tragedy indeed!

Not bad but no substitute for the original B&W movie.
decent remake of the original which is Americanised with U.S. children. Silly insertion of adult (pilot) who survives but semi-conscious from his injuries who suddenly leaves children's camp at night to a cave where he is mistaken for 'the monster' by the children and killed.

Bad
This seller is not good at adverticing. The picture is a bluray about and with the conductor Hans Knappertsbusch but, it’s not what you get. You get a german version of ”The Lord of the Flies” film. Please, be more careful how you advertice!!!!!

Great film
I saw this when it first came out I loved it ! I have seen the original film and also read the book I have read the comments on this version which had mixed reviews and I don't believe you can compare this film with the original version because the new version is trying to relate with a newer audience the first version was excellent but I still believe this version deserves a try but that's just my opinion
