Bottom Line: For large dog barking it works
Neighbor at my back fence got a large Doberman 6 months ago. I have a yard on more than half an acre and even if I don't go near the fence this dog barks at any family or friend that goes into my backyard. This dog thinks it owns my backyard and will routinely jump against the fence and bark ferociously. I don't understand why someone would want this dog unless they want to alienate their neighbors. The barking was non stop until I went back into my house. I have ignored this for a time, thinking that the dog would get used to me, but It got so bad that when I had family over for Christmas my father in law insisted that I do something about it and confront the neighbor. Well I need to split the cost of a new fence with this guy and some people defend their dogs like they are their children, they can do no wrong, and he is no different so I decided to buy this at my father in laws advice to avoid confrontation about the dog. I actually like dogs alot and would not like to see the dog destroyed. I figure its worth $36 to see if it works and I can always return it. I looked at a similar item that cost $60 and doesn't look nice (You can buy a bird house for it to sit in for an additional $60). No thanks. So this already looks like a bird house and I can just hang it on a tree. I set it to 50 ft range and hung it about 1 foot above the fence line on the back tree closest to the fence. I set it for 50 ft because my neighbor's yard is quite large and I wanted it to drive the dog back far from the fence. I saw immediate results. The dog will now bark a few times then stop and wimper and ran back in his doggie door. I think the owner of the dog knew something had changed because he even came out to see this new behavior. I think he thought I sprayed the dog with water or did something to the dog at first because he came out to inspect the dogs behaviour for 15 minutes trying to figure it out. That was the best part, watching them try to figure out what was wrong with his freakin barking dog, why it wasn't barking relentlessly anymore. He even threw a chew toy around a few times to get the dog going and excited but only a few barks and then stopped!. Now the new behavior is for the dog to pace back and forth along fence and growl/whimper at a low volume so as not to trigger the device. I only noticed this because was watching to see his behavior through the fence. It's not loud enough to bother anyone.Remember that this is a large dog with a low booming bark so I can't comment if it works with small yappy dogs (as others have commented it not working on) that may not set off the device, but for large low booming barks this works well. I got a bit of satisfaction when the owner came outside to figure out why his dang dog was so quiet. I think he actually liked to have the dog advertise its viciousness to keep others away from his yard. Well he will need to find a different way now that this dog barks about 5% of what it used to. I cant comment on longevity or how long the batteries last as I have only had it for 5 days. I hardly ever make reviews, but I had to make a comment because of all the bad reviews that almost kept me from trying this device. When I read the reviews I found most bad ones were for small yappy dogs that fail to set off the device. If you have a large dog problem give this a try.UPDATE: this worked well for 1-2 weeks. However, the dog now ignores the device, even with fresh batteries. I am sending it back. I feel bad that it worked so well at first and is now totally useless. Going to have to make complaints now I guess.

Not working properly anymore....
Update: I have had to stop using this device. Based on the behavior of my dogs, especially my Pom/Poodle mix (the barker) I think this thing emits a distressing sound even when no one is barking. At first it seemed that it was only on the highest setting that this happened. It took me a couple of hours to make the connection between the Dogtek and my little dog's shaking and cowering. I had never seen him behave that way before. Yesterday I noticed both dogs were agitated when I had the Dogtek set on the lowest setting while my cleaners were here. I forgot to turn it off when they left, and a couple of hours later I noticed Henry, the Pom mix, was cowering behind the couch. I have been trying ever since I got him to get him to stop barking at the slightest provocation and having the Dogtek react when he's not even doing anything is a major setback. I am trying to decide if I should buy the more expensive Petsafe model that I saw demonstrated at my pet sitter's, since I have determined that my dogs DO hear the frequency emitted by the Sonic Birdhouse, unlike the dogs of some of the reviewers. I like that both of my dogs quit barking when I waved the unit in front of them, without its being on.I am really happy with the Sonic Birdhouse. I have a three year-old Pomeranian/Poodle mix I got from the SPCA 9 months ago to be a companion to my mellow, eleven year-old Malamute/Beagle mix. The shelter had mostly Chihahua mixes, which I did not want, since I knew they could be crazy barkers. I was told by the shelter that Henry was an American Eskimo mix (hah!) He didn't bark at the shelter or the first night we had him, but he turned into a, hypersensitive, high-strung yapper within a couple of days. He got kicked out of training the first day because he couldn't calm down around other dogs (I had prepaid for a YEAR of classes, yet they had no problem giving me my money back). He barked every time a houseguest "reappeared," even after having met them. He was on constant alert. Although I live in the Santa Cruz foothills, I couldn't leave him out in the lux, heavy-duty kennel on my 2 acre wooded, ridge-top property because the neighbors complained about his persistent yap reverberating through the valley. I couldn't be away from home more than a few hours at a time. He had turned my other dog, Norman, into a chronic barker as well. Although Henry is the most loving, attentive to a fault, and otherwise obedient dog I've ever had, I was at my wits' end, and regretting I'd ever adopted him. I began to realize why a relatively young 17-pound dog, so cute, sweet, and smart had ended up at a shelter.I was fortunate enough to observe the effect of sonic bark control when I went to drop my dogs at their kennel before the holidays. The facility is essentially someone's home with 1 well-fenced acre. My dog and the other 5 dogs gathered around me were barking so loudly that I couldn't hold a conversation with the owner. He stepped in the his house to get his bark control birdhouse and do a demonstration for me as to how it worked, and as soon as the dogs SAW it they stopped barking. He never even had to turn it on, which surprised both of us, and couldn't even recall when my Henry would have seen it in operation on his previous stay over Thanksgiving. I ordered a Sonic Birdhouse as soon as I got home from the kennel, so it would be waiting for me when I returned home after Christmas. It was half the price of the PetSafe model, which the kennel used, but worked like a charm. I've only had to turn it on twice, on its low setting, and Henry has already curbed most of his overreactive indoor and outdoor barking, and knows to stop when I tell him to. All I have to do is show him the SB and he winces and stops yapping. I place it in view when I put him in the outdoor 12x6 kennel and have had no complaints since from the neighbors, whose house is on the market and whose own dogs bark often and used to set Henry off. I am greeting with some low volume whining when I get home, but neither dog seems the worse for the experience. I don't know if its the SB or just its effect on Henry, but Norman's barking has returned to its old short alert pattern. Some reviewers had written in to say the initial effect of the birdhouse has worn off on their dogs. I am at the end of a long private driveway and get no casual visitors or drive-bys, no pedestrians wondering by, so I don't know if constant distractions would dull the impact over time. For me, the Sonic Birdhouse works, and Henry is much more aware of his own barking. He will still bark at other dogs, despite my taking him to the beach often where he interacts with many other dogs, but I have taken the SB with me in the car to curb the frantic, crazed barking he used do when we pulled into the beach parking lot. He is much more aware of his own barking and I am able to appreciate his many good qualities.

Works great!!
I bought this in hopes that it would stop my chihuahua from unnecessary barking. This device has worked wonders. My dog is no longer barking for no reason. I love it!

Doesnot work!
The neighbor's dog was barking throughout the day and night. The neighbor would let him loose all day. This is a small dog. The dog just increased its barking after we put this up.
