Tree of Life: Turkish Home Cooking for the American Table

Much more than a cookbook
Tree of Life is much more than a cookbook. With quotes by Persian poet Rumi and Turkish proverbs opening each chapter, not only beautiful photographs of Turkish home cooking make the mouth water, but of modern-day Turkey, including both cityscapes and countryside, whirling dervishes, women working the land, selling produce and preparing meals, and fishermen. This 250-page tome belongs on the coffee table when not being used in the kitchen. A great gift idea that delivers a feast for the senses as well as a wallop of contemporary cultural information on Turkey. - Rozsa Gaston, author of medieval historical novel Sense of Touch: Love and Duty at Anne of Brittany's Court

Turkish Cooking with Story
A Cookbook with a story to tell. Not only do I have a personal copy from which I add new recipes to my repertoire, my library system has several copies for customers to check out! I love learning about food and the people who eat this food.. There are easy to follow recipes with beautiful photographs which often lead me to a new dish. I have always been been a collector of cookbooks, although as time passes, my idea of a qualifies as one to be purchased has changed. This is one that belongs on the coffee table to peruse and then will join other favorites that have made the cut to stay in the house!. I enjoy it when the cookbook can introduce you to a culture and allow you to understand more about the people..Anyone who has a well stocked kitchen should be able to cook most recipes without having to venture to a specialty store for ingredients. The Tree of Life is an excellent cookbook and tribute to a area, rich in food.

Not terribly authentic, but pretty.
Meh. I didn’t realize the author(s) aren’t Turkish (an oversight on my part). It’s pretty, but seems to lack authenticity, especially since referenced stories are from a Western point of view (the mentioning of Eid al-Adha being about Issac instead of Ishmael).

Gorgeous book
Tree of Life: Turkish Home Cooking is a gorgeous book - almost like a coffee table book - which is also fun to read. Each recipe includes color photos and a description that helps the reader understand how the dish is used in Turkey, as well as some flavor from the authors as they describe how they first encountered a particular dish and obtained the recipe. The authors made sure you can find the ingredients locally (in America) or suggested available substitutes. I am looking forward to trying out these recipes.
