Six Miles to Charleston: The True Story of John and Lavinia Fisher

Phenomenal, Heartbreaking Must-Read
I decided to write a speech on Lavinia Fisher, the most notorious serial killer in Charleston’s history. As an avid dissector of criminal history, I was intrigued by the legends I’d always heard of Lavinia and eager to tell a gruesome tale. I just finished this book and I am left with profound grief for three individuals who were the victims of political corruption and greed. If you are reading this book expecting the literary prowess of an award-winning author, adjust your expectations. This book felt like an earnest discussion over coffee with an investigator, armed with all the necessary data and keen on setting the record straight. Orr paints a clear picture of the politics of the early 1800s, making important connections and illustrating the motives behind the crimes committed against Lavinia, John, and William. I am filled with passion at the injustice that occurred and compelled to embark on a crusade to clear Lavinia and John’s names. I would love to book ghost tours in Charleston and confront the profit mongering tour guides that rake in cash, exploiting the false legend of a slave girl wronged at the hands of corrupt, Charleston elite. The fact that I can name several buildings named after the people involved makes my skin crawl. This book is a must read. Do it for Lavinia. 💪🏽

Fascinating history marred by poor editing
The story of John and Lavinia Fisher seems much different than the legend. More interesting, too. Maybe not serial killers, but instead victims of corrupt local politics. The details kept fascinating me more as I read. The writing could be more disciplined — it wandered from the point several times — but the historical details stuck in my head more than the style. I’d probably mention this book to anyone who brought up Lavinia Fisher.

Great research!
Charleston is a time machine in itself and who doesn't get caught up with its deep rooted history and charm. After taking one of the historic tours of the penninsula, I was interested in learning more about the Fishers and this book demonstrates just how distorted the truth can get. The author does a superb job of refocusing the reader; from an urban legend and uncovering the facts through extensive research. I felt like I was watching an episode of Perry Mason..... Sadly, justice does not prevail and the Fishers turn out to be the victims....I couldn't put this book down!

Great research-- not the most well written...
The author has clearly done his research, which is fantastic. However, although this book tells an interesting story, the writing is only adequate and quite confusing. If you're not interested in this topic and this legend, I would advise against buying. Simply because the writing is rough. Great research though!

Fabulous!!!!!!!!!
Bruce Orr tells a riveting story based upon facts thought to be long lost to time. As someone who also grew up around Charleston,he proves that legends and stories of the low country over time often morph into tall tells. Bruce has applied his skills a a seasoned detective to unravel a story I have heard numerous times. He not only brings a great deal of new information to light but also humanizes an injustice that took place close over 200 hundred years ago.I am willing to bet once you begin reading this you won't want to put it down.Thank you Bruce for your research and insights.
