A struggling NYC artist, John Hollar (John Krasinski), is forced to return to the small, middle-American town he left behind after learning about his mother’s illness. Back in the house he grew up in, John is immediately swept up in the problems of his dysfunctional family, high school rival and an over-eager ex-girlfriend as he faces impending fatherhood with his NYC girlfriend (Academy Award Nominee Anna Kendrick, 2009, Best Supporting Actress, Up in the Air). John Krasinski’s second feature as a director is a poignant look at the bonds of family and friendship.

Best Movie I've Seen In A Long Time
This movie was fabulous, it had me laughing and crying and unable to stop watching at the 30-minute mark as I'd initially planned, with plans to finish it in the evening. Instead, I could NOT stop watching and enjoyed every minute. Best of all, there are no sexual innuendo, no sex scenes, no nudity, no crude language and no f-bombs flying around, so my entire family (including our teen) can watch it again this weekend as a family movie. It was so good, I can't wait to watch it again. I took a chance and bought it because of the cast: Margo Martindale (love her!), Richard Jenkins (can't go wrong with these two in the cast) and John Krasinski. I even paid extra to get it the day it came out and am SO glad I did. I've already recommended it to friends, it's so good.

John Krasinski is an excellent story-teller as a director
This is a little sleeper of a gem. John Krasinski is an excellent story-teller as a director. The movie and the characters are so real and quirky. It is not overtly funny, but it is funny because of the reality of the life experiences and reactions of people. I believe John Krasinski has caught and exemplified the foundational movie-making principle of creating from a base of love and he does this here and he does it well.this movie does not rely on profanity, nudity, sexual innuendo or violence to make a story. Instead, it relies on actual story-telling that requires much more intellect, creativity and effort than the former list requires. I can only hope that Mr. Krasinski will continue his story-telling efforts utilizing these same principles of movie-making as here. If he does, he will be on track to be one of the greatest directors/movie-makers of all time, just you wait and see.

You really should watch this one.
Excellent movie. I'd never even heard of it until I saw it on Amazon video. It's surprisingly very memorable - every actor did a wonderful job and you end up caring very much about this family. It's sweet without being corny or syrupy, dramatic in a normal-people's lives kind of way, and offbeat enough that you really don't know what path the story will take until you're done watching it. Beautifully done. Wish there were more like this.

Subtle Comedy; More Humanity
1. I needed, at the end, to see the new babies!! (Big oversight to be at the funeral, have to zoom to the hospital andnot have the new life coming in, after losing the big loving life that just left!)2. I cried, drippingly, when elder son so lovingly and caressingly, shaved his mother's head. That seemed to be theessential message of the whole movie - show care through whatever happens.3. I laughed out loud when elder son and mom escaped from hospital before her "Last Meal" to an ice cream shop!4. I felt shared happiness and delight the at "wedding" ceremony, and how they gave each other their betrothal rings.5. I felt joy when the dad finally grew up at the end; he was glad, too.I've avoided John Krazinski (sp) only seeing the "Jack Ryan" ads, which are not of interest, but am so glad to have bothered to look at what else he may have done. Perhaps he is a force for humanitarianism, caring, and compassion in stories that reflect more or less real situations, and how we can actually get through them without despair.

Language
Loved the actors but as a believer in Jesus as Lord and savior, we had to turn it off after the first scene. There’s a scene where a character took the Lords name in vein repeatedly over and over again. It would of been a really funny movie I’m sure if not for the crassness.

Funny and very touching!
I really enjoyed this movie. I was not expecting much, due to some reviews I had seen, but they were wrong. This movie has some very funny scenes - John Krazinski is a big favorite of mine! There are some other scenes that are on a much sadder note, but are very touching. I love the cast. Well done by all. A dysfunctional family that will remind you of your own :)

Could Have Been So Much Better ...
There wasn't any real laugh out loud moments, nor was there much on the emotional scale. It is a common story: a dysfunctional family, a "successful" sibling, a family screw up, the father not really "there" and a mother serving as the family matriarch. The only shining moment was Josh Groban.Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed all the actors, but there talents were wasted on a weak script with an all-too-common theme. Also, the movie just seemed to drag on for a lot longer than it actually is. By the time it was over, I thought over 2 hours had passed.A very generous 3-star rating because of the cast.

This is a comedy? Ummmmm, no. But it is a good movie
Ok- the only reason this is not a five star rating was because i rented it while it was under "comedies" and I cried the last 20 minutes and will have to go work tomorrow and explain that my puffy eyes are from crying because of the so called comedy I watched. Fabulous acting and wonderful movie I think John K did great- but when looking for a lighthearted Friday night flick this should not be your go to. I'm just hoping my eyes get less puffy before I have to teach Saturday school tomorrow!

Good actors all but...
As a new director, I will give John thumbs up for being in two jobs. Not any chemistry with the women folk or girlfriends. The nurse was funny. Keep trying John. You will get there. This is a simple, nice, easy movie to watch.
