Murder at the Opera House (A Lady Marjorie Snellthorpe Mystery Book 1)

Enjoyable Read
The relationship between Lady Marjorie and her cousin-in-law Edna is a very interesting one. They both grate on each other at times, but there is a deeper bond and both of them would defend and support the other if needed. There are some funny exchanges between the two of them which is well written dialogue. The setting for the book was different as the group were waiting to join a river cruise, and the murder at the opera house delayed their journey. New characters have been introduced and clearly Lady Marjorie has found a friend in Frederick, which will be another developing relationship. I like the fact that Dawn’s books are set in places you can visit yourself, or in places I have already been and it brings back memories of my own travels. This book is well paced and easy to read, and it’s fun trying to work out who the villain is and it’s a welcome change to have lively characters from the older generation actively involved in crime detection. It’s well worth reading and I certainly enjoyed it.

"Marge" and Edna are a formidable team!
For the first time ever, Edna and "Marge," as Edna annoyingly calls her, are sleuthing together! I really like the way Lady Marjorie is realistically slow in her acceptance of Edna as she is. I like to think she will be a true lady and be kinder as time goes on. Of course, as the reader, we are privy to insights into Edna's feelings and background which Marjorie isn't. This is very well done with scope for further thawing and a strong friendship to develop.I have to say there are not many likeable characters in this story which does make it a tad onerous to read as you are just wanting to find out who dunnit, and not enjoying the people in it as you go. Also there is a lot of conversation, more so than action. You have to really focus to work out who the murderer is. An excellent read!

Great fun
I love the Rachel Prince series but am not so keen on the Carlos spin-offs. For that reason, I was a bit wary of this new Lady Marjorie series as I thought that it might make the same impression on me as the Carlos ones, that is to say, a disappointing one. In fact, I loved this book and rate it as one of the best Dawn Brookes mysteries so far. It was so enjoyable that I didn't even notice Rachel's absence. The characters have really clicked, so important in a 'cosy' series, and I look forward to their further adventures.

Another brilliant story from Dawn Brooke's.
I first came across Lady Marjory Snelthorp in the Rachel Prince cruise stories. Loved the character then, now she has been given her own series of books and she is just as feisty. Great characterisation and a great story.

A very cosy mystery
A fairly quick read, but it certainly packs a lot in. Whilst the author suggests that there is some history of the main character to be gained from her other series, I had no problem with picturing the characters, just from their interactions. It is certainly deserving of the classification of "cosy mystery". I did manage to figure out who the murderer was a short while before the denouement, but not so far before it as to spoil the ending. If you want an easy to read book with recognisable and fun characters, then I can recommend this one.

Cute story
A quick mystery read. For the older generation of travelers the characters are quick witted and entertaining. Marjorie and her cousin might not always get along but they enjoy solving murders along with their travel partners.

I hesitated between 3 and 4 stars
This is a decent book. It drags out a bit in some places though. Not a bad mystery - with a nice twist at the end... if I had figured out the who did it before all was revealed! There are some good characters, written in a light and amusing style.. why I opted for the 4 stars in the end.
