Good info on the New Russian Army
This book is about the Russian Army up to 2016 so some of it is now dated. But it still gives you of what Putin is doing. And it will give some reference on the state of his army(troops & weapons) now.

the modern Russian Army, in brief...
The Russian Army has come a long ways since the fall of the Soviet Union. Once starved for funding and thrown unprepared into combat in places like Chechnya, the patronage of Vladimir Putin has led to better days. The modern Russian Army seeks to modernize its equipment, professionalize its soldiers, and test its new doctrines. Indeed, the modern Russian Army has enjoyed successes in Russia's near aboard and in keeping order at home..."The Modern Russian Army 1992-2016" is an Osprey Elite Series book, well-authored by Mark Galeotti, with illustrations by Johnny Shumate. In a briskly written 64 pages, the author captures the Russian Army's recent history, including its combat actions, its elite units, and the effects on its soldiers. The narrative is backed by a terrific collection of photographs, illustrations, and maps. Well recommended as an excellent introduction to a timely subject.

Multi-dimensional look at the Russian military.
In "The Modern Russian Army 1992-2016", Mark Galeotti has given us a concise history of the follow-on forces that replaced the Red Army in wake of the collapse of the USSR.The book begins with the collapse of the USSR and the absolute chaos and collapse of morale in the military Russian inherited from the now-defunct communist state. The author is able to convey the confusion, the lack of resources, the poverty of it's soldiers including the officer corps as well as the collapse in morale. The Chechen wars were the first challenges for the Russian army, challenges they did not handle well, getting their clocks cleaned in the first war and having to resort to overwhelming force in the second war. Throughout the book is the thread of the complete corruption hidden in the old USSR and then revealed for all to see in the aftermath. There were attempts at reforms that have had an effect in the decades since though they haven't removed all corruption by any means. The author looks at the new Russian army's new conditions for volunteer soldiers and conscripts, quite different from the Soviet era. There's a good look at Russian uniforms, weapons, units and gear. This volume even encompasses the Russian army's operations against Georgia and in the Crimea whi was a bloodless coup.I think the author does a good job of avoiding making this just another work about TO&E and guns/weapons. The author looks at the human dimension, how they've evolved their military and how they've performed since the collapse of the USSR.

Good to see an updated book on the current status ...
Good to see an updated book on the current status of the Russian army. Osprey always delivers a outstanding product to read. Easy to read and follow along with lots of pictures and organization of the army. Book covers weapons and daily life in the army, an interesting portion to me is the current status of the army in Syria and Ukrainian, which is also covered in detail.

Osprey well done on current Russian Army activities.
Hello Amazon: About as good as you can get for a work in progress: The Russian Army. Fine color plates, as always, with Osprey, and up to date reviews of current Russian Army activities and agendas. Putin pushing whatever envelope he can. A couple of photos of the newest tank, Armata T-14, which will be a ground-breaker: Three man crew, none in the turret. Delivery was fast, price very good on an excellent condition book. SAA. 03Aug2017.

It would be nice to see Osprey do a book that would cover the Russian army from 1945 to current status using the past books color plates.

Disappointing, opinionated and questionable book
I've let this book sink in some time after reading to properly reflect on it and to not write the harsh verdict that initially formed in my mind. But I can't really help it: This book just scratched on the surface of things that are widely known for as long as the reader didn't entirely close his eyes to developments in Russia in the last couple of decades. Instead of presenting these facts and several related anecdotal events in a straight up fashion, the author couldn't help but to mix in undertones and opinions that could have come straight from the US State Department under Obama as if he needed to score brownie points with them. That certainly raises the question how the author formed the opinions he stated in this book and which he presented as matter of fact. But you might have guessed it: He didn't present *any* factual evidence in form of an appendix or reference to secondary or tertiary sources throughout the whole book. Not only in regards to his opinions, but also other things that he presented as facts. If not for the length, this could as well have been an OpEd for the Washington Post. I'm disappointed to have wasted my time reading this book.

Ottimo per chi, come me, sapeva poco nulla
Un buon riassunto dell'evoluzione delle forze armate russe dalla seconda guerra mondiale ai giorni nostri. Ottimo per chi cerca informazioni "storiche" ma non per chi cerca informazioni molto specifiche sugli equipaggiamenti. In parole povere, "wannabe reenactors cercate altrove".

Recomendable.

The New Russian Army - strengths and weaknesses
This fills a currently very important gap in the market, a cost-effective primer on the modern Russian Army for which one would otherwise probably need to delve into academic studies or obscure monthly publications. Galeotti has published other books in the series on aspects of modern Russian life (notably Paramilitary and Security Forces, and Spetsnaz), so builds on his previous work in a complementary rather than repetitive way.Thankfully from this reviewer's point of view, the book majors in historical and political developments rather than the minutiae of uniform changes, from the shambolic Yeltsin years to Putin's hybrid warfare in Ukraine. Information on the cultural problems facing the Russian Army (and probably the rest of her armed forces), namely the culture of bullying and the eye-watering amount of corruption in procurement and other areas, makes for interesting reading and reminds the reader that despite the sometimes fearsome aspects given to the armies bankrolled by Putin, the Russians are human and have their own issues which no doubt render them less effective than on paper. However the book also makes it clear that the Russian Army has moved to a new level since the early post-Soviet days. There is some information on new weapon systems, including the new Armata tank, about which the writer tantalising offers two contrasting opinions. No doubt Osprey will have a book out on it within the next couple of years.
