Younger You: Reverse Your Bio Age - and Live Longer, Better

Good, accurate, factual book
Very good, factual book, but the audible version is slightly annoying when the narrator mispronounces arteriosclerosis and betaine, etc, but generally good otherwise. The science matches the various scientific studies on the subject that I've read snd seems to be well reasoned.

Really useful and full of great hints and tips - non preachy
This was very interesting. My new digital scales have the body age and I do need to look at reducing this (at one stage it was nearly double my age) so this was a really useful book to have.It was not preachy and the recipes were relatively easy to follow. There were good hints on general lifestyle changes which were not hard to make.I was given an advance copy by the publishers and netgalley but the review is entirely my own.

Interesting, but the eating part would be a challenge
Overall, I found this an interesting book. The suggestions about how to sleep well, do moderate exercise and meditate daily are useful and achievable. The science behind the approach is well detailed and interesting (although worrying too). The author goes into a considerable amount of detail about diet and nutrition. One disadvantage of reading on the kindle is that the charts are not formatted properly making it virtually impossible to understand the information at times. The 8 week diet that she suggests starting with is fairly restrictive. As is the case with many of these diets, it requires cooking and making everything from scratch which would be very time consuming. It does look good though if you have plenty of time - I would find this virtually impossible when I work full time, especially because I would have to cook separately for the children who wouldn't enjoy most of this. As well as the intensive 8 week programme, she also details an everyday programme. She includes a meal plan for the every day programme which is useful. Although she includes a shopping list for the intensive programme, I couldn't see the actual meal plan to use this shopping list with. There is a large section of recipes, and these do look very tasty. I will certainly be trying some of them. There are also links to an app and a website, where you can pay to join a programme. This was fairly expensive, so it's not something I would be signing up to. If there had been a detailed meal plan for the intensive programme, I would have given this book 4 stars. If there had been some easier meals on both of the plans, including some ready to buy and eat ideas, and the book had not linked to an expensive online programme, I would have given it 5 stars.Note: I received a digital review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

Not for me
Not for me. I struggled to read this book, possibly because the review copy didn’t format well on my e-reader. The first part of the book was about Bio Age but I quickly became bored. Overall, it didn’t really seem to be telling me anything new or useful. I have already taken on board most of the general advice on healthy eating and exercise, so this book did not contribute anything radically different.

A detailed scientific approach
Loved the detailed approach. Lots of scientific studies and the author’s own experiences have gone into making this a truly wonderful treat for the readers and pursuers of anti aging.

Just finished the 8 week Intensive!
I discovered this book after listening to Dr. David Perlmutter's Empowering Neurologist episode with Dr. Mark Hyman in early 2023. They mentioned Dr. Fitzgerald's groundbreaking study, which she turned into a book. I was curious so I checked out the audio book from the library, and bought this one week later.I experience tremendous brain fog following health issues in 2020. Now age 43 and starting to notice aches, memory challenges, and other subtle signs of aging, I committed to the 8 week intensive plan in this book and AM SO GLAD I DID! I've tried other functional medicine food plans (ex. Wahl Protocol) but NONE were as easy to follow as this, and as healthful and productive. Within 1 week, I lost 4 lbs (likely inflammation?) and found a fountain of energy within. I made my own checklist/tracker to help me stick to the requirements of the plan. Every day, I would track my food, water, sleep, and lifestyle requirements from the Plan. Then, at the end of the week, I'd weigh myself and I gave myself a "grade" for how many of the things I followed each week, with the goal of hitting 80% or more of the targets. This helped me not give up if I couldn't get to all the things each day, like meditation or exercise or eating a beet each day!8 weeks later, I'm shifting to the Everyday plan, but frankly, the Intensive is actually quite do-able everyday. That is, if you are already open to living a low-sugar, low processed food diet. I have been mostly sugar and processed food free for a few years, so although I miss those foods, I know I feel incredibly better without them.I'm so glad that I found this book! Thank you to the functional medicine doctors who celebrate each other, promote one another, and put global health above individual profits. I put Dr. Hyman and Dr. Fitzgerald in the same tier of incredible doctors, and frankly, they could be considered 'competitors' in their fields. I love Dr. Perlmutter's podcast because he introduces me to what's BEST in health right now!I can't recommend this book enough. It took me a few chapters to start understanding DNA methylation's importance, but now, I can't un-see it. So much more meaningful to me than counting calories or macros, which I did for a long time and NEVER achieved the sense of wellness I feel now. That's just me and where I'm at in my health journey.

very insightful
Excellent history and use of current science from the author and her colleagues to explain how the body functions and ages. It was nice for me to be able to brush up on the latest molecular biology. This level was not known when I was in school.

I expected more
This is a good book if you are not knowledgeable about diet and it walks you through what to do. What I did not care for was it came across like just one more self promoting new diet. There is some strong scientific intertwined with basically “opinion”.

You could do way worse, but inconsistent and overly difficult plan
Many diet or eating healthy plans are actually unhealthy in the long term. This book avoids that issue. This is why I give it 3 stars (instead of less). However, in order for this diet plan to work for the largest amount of people, healthy foods are unnecessarily left out for everybody. The most obvious example is wheat (and other gluten containing grains). Sure: an increasing number of people are allergic or sensitive to wheat - and they should avoid triggering their symptoms. However, for the rest of us whole wheat products are an affordable and healthy source of fiber, protein and carbs.Another obvious example is peanuts (and peanut butter). Unless you're allergic, these are actually shown to be healthy - why bother cutting it out for the rest of us?Also left out - though the book actually acknowledges that this is a health food - is legumes (beans, peas, lentils). These are fiber powerhouses, their carbs are slow (as in: they won't give you too much of a sugar spike) and they contain a decent amount of protein. People who live a long time generally eat a lot of legumes, and I think western people would do well to add it to their diet. I certainly improved my digestion a LOT with it. The issue with soaking and or cooking them is moot: nobody eats beans raw.Last but not least: while this book tries to cater to vegans and vegetarians as well - that crowd should go straight to the Whole Food Plant Based books: they will avoid over-supplementation (beyond what everybody should be looking at, you really only need b12) and better advice on what to watch out for. Dr. Greger is my favorite for this crowd. In general: while this plan is definitely healthier than what most people are eating, the book does propagate myths that have been disproven. For a better 'how to live long and healthy' book, check out Walter Longo.
