Q: where is this french press made?

The packaging is long gone, and no markings on the glass, the plastic, or the metal parts. But I can say that the quality is a step above any of the Bodum pots. Glass is much thicker, though not perfect, is a decent quality. I have accidentally broken many Bodum pots, but this is much heavier.

Q: Is the glass carafe replaceable?

There is a glass beaker replacement park that is listed as a universal replacement for the Grosche Madrid at a cost of $11.99. Some people purchase one at the same time; the metal encasement which is a very attractive feature also acts as some protection for the French press. While I've not ordered the replacement part it wouldn't be a bad idea if you are concerned about breakage.

Q: How do you make tea with this? I assume it must be loose leaf.

Put the loose leaf tea at the bottom. It should work with almost any tea except matcha, since that's such a fine powder. Then pour the boiling water on top (for almost all black teas), water just before boiling point for oolong and the most robust herbal teas, or about 160 degrees for green teas or herbal teas that lose flavor when the water's too hot.The disadvantage to using it over a tea ball is that you do need to pour almost immediately or the tea will get too strong.

Q: is the lid/filter plastic? It looks like a black piece in the photo

I understand your concern about the plastic as that was one of our concerns but upon arrival discovered it was possible to raise the lid at the time of pouring the coffee so it didn't come in contact with the actual plastic. Its a wonderful French press.
