Q: What is grain size of this sand? Fine, super fine, course?

I'd say the grains are about 1/10 the size of standard aquarium gravel. Not super fine, but I wouldn't say coarse either.

Q: How many bags do I need for a 40 gal tank

Assuming you want to get about an inch of sand, also assuming the length and width of your 40 gallon is the standard 36 inch by 18 inch, you would need about 30 lbs of sand, or 6 of these bags. But as a warning, I purchased this and returned it because the color is much different than the pictures. Theres a lot of light colored sand mixed in making it a gray, salt and pepper color. I wanted black.
