Yes, you just have to throw it at and hit the squirrel with it and the squirrel, rabbit, neighbor kids, X-Wife, etc. will take off running.

Q: does it require batteries

No batteries - it is basically a plastic statue - it doesn't move. The eyes are very lifelike - they seem to be made of glass - that's what scares the birds and other critters. You can either hang it on a tree with string so it swings in the air, or you can fill it with sand or dirt and place it somewhere on the ground like we did. We've had it for several weeks now - all the crows are gone, very rarely see a squirrel, but we still have nice birds like cardinals and sparrows (they mainly stay up in the trees now).

Q: Does it keep bats away?

I have not found anything it keeps away

Q: I lost the orange cap under the owl. anyone know how would i get a replacement? i put rocks to make my owl heavier but i lost the cap.

This seems to be a problem based on customer reviews. Mine came without a plug, I complained via customer service chat. The first lady told me they did not supply just the plugs and I would have to return for another one. I had walked away from the conversation, got another lady and she told me she was going to send me a replacement owl at no charge and I could keep the other one. So now i have two, but one with no plug. I will look around for something to use .
