good value
These old fashioned galvanized items are harder to find now, even in the hardware stores. They have lots of plastic stuff from China though. Love this sturdy Waterer made in the USA! Looking forward to using this durable item for many years to come.

Great for the price.
Well made. I noticed most of the people complaining were doing things with it that the instructions say not to do. For example: one person said it broke a short time after hanging it. It specifically says "do not hang". One person said that the outer handle broke. The instructions say NOT to carry by the outer handle. One person said it rusted quickly when they used liquid vitamins. Liquid vitamins are acidic and corrosive. It says so on the bottle. They complained that it trusts after awhile. It will rust, it's made of steel. My solution was to simply sand and paint it. Also if you're using tap water, it contains chlorine which is highly corrosive and will cause anything to rust faster. If youre concerned rust may hurt your chickens, don't be. Iron oxide (aka rust) will only supply dietary iron like the black specks you get from cooking in cast iron. Its galvanized which means its electroplated in zinc. Don't worry about it. The amount it would take to poison a chicken is about 50 times the amount on the whole container. Please people read instructions and follow them before you decide to give a bad review. Nothing is perfect, the plastic founts have hundreds of hazardous materials but no one mentioned that because you can't see them. Also use common sense, I know it's rare and all but come on. I only use the metal fount during the winter so i can use the fount heater to keep it from freezing. I use a large plastic one in the summer. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Sure the metal one rusts but the plastic one will slowly photodegrade and shatter like glass. It's a fine fount if you ask me. I gave it five stars because it does what it says it would. It never claimed to last forever or be rust proof. So I don't see where that would factor in.

5 FIVE+++ PRODUCT!! BUY IT. IT'S SO WORTH IT & A GREAT INVESTMENT!!
I absolutely love this & PLEASE make the investment in this! So well worth it. In the past, bought plastic = worthless, tried another similar item but different company = junk... But this Little Giant is AWESOME! I have a long way to go from filling this and putting it in the coop. I had problems in the past with others not making it to my destination without losing half the water on the way BUT...This is different... Better... Stronger... Better made... Designed perfectly. Look, I am new country girl, blond and well takes me a few times to get things but this was simple, well designed, a no-brainer and one of my TOP 10 Best items bought over the last year with Amazon. I am actually buying 5 more for other animals on our new farm!! I am in Florida so it's always hot here even in shade and this keeps water cool. It does go below freezing here but those who write about letting their waterers freeze are obviously not so bright and shouldn't be playing with water! Water freezes. Take what most people do, called precautions, to protect your water for any outdoor animal or livestock. Yes it LEAKS, it SUPPOSED to leak... Read the instructions that it comes with... It says, may leak but it is supposed because when you place top on and twist it pushes the lever that depresses inside to slowly let water fill as animals drink. It's not rocket scientist to figure that is how it is supposed to work. Even I can do that!Look this is A 5 FIVE PLUS PRODUCT!! BUY IT. IT IS SO WORTH IT AND A GREAT INVESTMENT IN YOUR MONEY!! Will last a long time if you take care of it! Enjoy!

Great product for our pigeons!
We have a pigeon coop with around 10 pet satinettes and homing pigeons that were rescues. I originally purchased the plastic waterers, which work well and were so easy! Then along came winter and freezing temperatures and I got tired of changing them out a few times daily so I purchased this galvanized one, along with the heated base so I don't need to make as many trips out through the snow. The first metal one (a 2 gal) worked pretty well but was a little hard to open / close, and did leak slightly. Unfortunately, it was totally rusted inside within 8 weeks. I took it back to our local feed and farm store and showed them. They exchanged it out for a new one and all I can say is WOW! What a difference! This one works so much better than the other! Easier to open / close, no rust (at least so far) and no leakage at all.I'm guessing that the people who are reporting problems probably just got one that is somehow bent or distorted, or just not made correctly. Perhaps there quality control issues with manufacturing. But if you're lucky enough to get one that works.... they work GREAT! If not, just return it and find a good one.And definitely don't use vinegar or any other treatment in your water... that will break down the galvanization and cause your fount to rust.

Water level
I recently purchased this product and am a little skeptical thus far. The water level sits at approximately 1 inch in the bowl portion. This seem very low when you have chickens with "peepers" on trying to get a drink. I have had to break the suction in the double wall container every day to ensure the water level is high enough for my birds to drink. I contacted the help line and was told to "bend" the outer container into an oval shape rather than a round shape, but have not read any reviews having to do this? I will wait another week or so before I resort to possibly bending the outer cover.

didn't last a year
Less than 12 months use and rust. Rusting so bad the water turns brown. When I change the water in it. It's only 1/2 empty and the water is brown inside. That can't be good for the birds. So I bought a plastic one to replace this one.
