Maria's Lovers [DVD]

LOVE Nastassja Kinski
Nice to finally have this one on blu-ray. The old DVD from MGM was a double-sided disc, and those have given me nothing but problems. With the blu-ray you have the movie on a single-sided disc and of course it looks much better. This was one of Nastassja's best from the 80's.

Wish One Had Been Me (sigh)
Not Kinski's best, but I've been smitten by this gorgeous woman ever since I first saw her in 1975 in "The Wrong Move." "Maria's Lovers" (there are only three, so settle down) is a "little" movie with a strong sense of small town life right after WWII in the Alleghenies and a nicely tortured performance by John Savage as a Pacific Theater of War prisoner camp survivor with a very interesting and rather heart-breaking case of PTSD. An early role for Vincent Spano, who is just ok. But Keith Carradine as Clarence Butts (No if's and's) and his pet bulldog steal every scene they're in.

Casual femme fatale
If you like redemptive themes, this movie may be worthwhile. Natassja Kinski plays a casually disinterested young woman (or maybe it's just her acting)' Her boyfriend returns from the war and she is dating another soldier. She eventually marries the soldier. They break up and she picks-up with a travelling singer. She becomes pregnant and searches out her husband, who has moved to another town, because she needs a father for her child. He forgives her and they move back together. That's the very basic story. It is worth a look because the events and the ending are unusual and unpredictable. This is just an impressionistic view of the film.

worth watching
I think Maria's lovers is a nice enjoyable film, A little slow paced at times, a little soap opera-ish but enjoyable. While not having a lot of characters( the streets seem almost empty) it develops personalities well. I thought it focused on internal conflicts after coming home from war/military service and re-intergrading back into a small town. It challenges you to rethink what love is, real love between a young couple and how our own demons affect this relationship. While it did attempt to show some cultural background in the characters they were a little generic. Nastassja is stunning and the scenery of this small Pennsylvania town is breath taking. Overall a very nice and underrated movie

The best film she ever appeared in
Nastassja Kinski is a heartbreakingly moving actress, or can be. Sadly her choices haven't been great. But Maria's Lovers is a wonderful small film, a Tolstoy short story cleverly transposed to (is it?) West Virginia. Kinski is delightful, both her lovers are perfectly cast, and there's a wonderful dog - what's not to like? It's a little masterpiece.

Superbe film. À voir et à revoir encore et encore.
