How cannot you love these crayons
These squares are made with natural iron oxides, carbon black and titanium dioxide, but also kaolin plus cellulose ether. This set of 12 Conte is a very good deal if you want to save money and like challenges making life drawing for example. Sketching means practice and Conte technique takes time to control. Used already by artists like the incredible Seurat, the rendering of these crayons is simply amazing especially when used with toned paper with the white Conte crayons to indicate light. Each crayon is a square stick that you can use on all sides. Every rendering depends on the pressure you apply on the crayon to create values and volumes; it also depend on how you hold the square and the movement you effectuate. The key is practice practice and practice. Once you start to be familiar with it and that it becomes the prolongation of your arm then you do not want to use anything, but them in all colors: sanguine and bistre included. They have in case of a very informative and useful pdf on their site about how to use their products. They have three grades of black and this one is a HB. Try them and enjoy. Do not be despair at the beginning. It is just a matter of time and practice....again!

They feel really nice to sketch with
There were fantastic honestly, and their texture on the paper was amazing as well. They're very soft, but not soft enough to make me lose my grip on them. Would recommend :)

Excellent product.
A harder conte - easier to make thinner lines and cross-hatching. Excellent product.

Sad memory of its former quality
This was once a fine and perfectly uniform pigment powder pressed into absolutely reliable sticks of archival pigments and binders. I knew drawing with Conte’ a Paris on a substrate of equally high quality would be capable of surviving for centuries and look as fresh in the future as the day the last mark was made. I no longer have that confidence in Conte’ a Paris. To squeeze a few pennies more from each package of sticks they are now clumsily, indifferently made in China. Grit is now part of the blend from poor quality control in the grinding, rollering and sifting. Now the pigment in the sticks sometimes scratches and cuts the paper surface making even very fine paper bloom and feather, picking up great wads of pigment and leaving pox scars and dark wounds part of the finished drawing. With a well established reputation for ALWAYS making shortcuts and using the most shabby and unstable, sometimes even toxic base ingredients Conte’ a Paris turns to China for indentured labor. For Conte a Paris to be made in China is a threat to the archival stability of one’s work that is not worth the risk. It is a great loss of a once delightful line of media. I cannot recommend these for serious artists or even for committed pleasure-hobby artists.
