Wireless Success
I have used Mikrotik routers in a professional setting so when my D-Link router started to fail I knew what I wanted. The RB951G router is quite remarkable for the size and more importantly for the cost. For only a little bit more money than the consumer grade stuff out there from Cisco, D-Link and Belkin, you can get a much higher quality box. This isn't a router for those who just want to hook up their tablet, phone or laptop to the internet. For those, the consumer grade boxes are probably quite adequate. If you are like me and have several computers, multiple laptops and other IoT items in your home, this box is for you.The router has the traditional web interface (which I never actually use!) as well as a program called winbox that lets you manage the myriad of features included. The software is probably too complex for the casual user, but it does give you exacting control over the functionality of the router.Mikrotik routers should be considered professional grade, and although they're not high-end, they are quite suitable for business class usage. There are a couple issues with the unit in my opinion, but nothing to do with the functionality: first, the lights are TOO BRIGHT -- I have to tape over the lights since my computer room is kept dim and the lights are distracting. Second, the box is too light-weight. If you plug in all 5 ethernet cables, you'll need to use something to stick the box to the shelf or the cables will pull it around. :) (Minor quibbles and easily dealt with)Overall, I gave this router a 5 star rating. A very solid piece of equipment at a fantastic price.

Mikrotik is a clear winner.
20-device household. Stood up one of these about 18 months ago, and it's never fallen over. I've done some updates, and none of them seemed to have caused any fits. Absolutely insane set of options, and the Winbox software runs just fine in wine on Linux. Never used the built-in wireless, so I can't comment. Box is very utilitarian. This thing means business. Absolutely sips power, and doesn't even get warm.Find the arstechnica article "The Router rumble: Ars DIY build faces better tests, tougher competition" to get an idea of how comparable Mikrotik hardware performs against some serious competition.Pound for pound, Mikrotik probably beats everything. Capable of practically everything, power efficient as can be, stable, mature. But Ubiquiti is certainly a challenger. I just deployed an Edgerouter X a few days ago, and I have an EdgeRouter Lite and EdgeRouter PoE I'm about to tinker with. Time will tell.Years ago, I'd deploy select Linksys routers flashed with Tomato (shibby). A cheap Mikrotik will probably crush any of those into oblivion in almost any scenario. Still love me some shibby though!I set up a lot of ASUS now for consumers (AC66U/R, AC68U/R/P, AC87U). Dead stable, quick, insane wireless range. Firmware gets updated for years and years. Merlin firmware is extra great. Tomato is an option too (sometimes?).If you need a small Mikrotik with enormous performance, you might look at a RouterBoard 850Gx2 Kit. Dual 500ish MHz PPC. I hear these things really fly! Note: I've never deployed one of these.

Good unit with stable performance and 1 watt RF power but difficult to set up
I bought this unit primarily because I wanted a higher WIFI B/G/N signal strength and a gigabit capable integrated switch. After I finally got it set up satisfactory, I must say it delivers on those requirements. However, this unit is not easy to set up. Miktotik offers a “wiki” website for this unit, but to fully understand that, you need a degree in computer network technology. It does NOT come with a printed user manual, nor could I find a PDF containing the essentials. So I eventually figured it out by trial and error. The first challenge was to set it up in WLAN bridge mode, as I did not need a DHCP server (that I already have in another AP upstream in my network). Turns out you need to select “PTP bridge AP”, a mode that only showed up after I installed the latest firmware. Once you got that to work, you need to set up your client setup computer for static IP, otherwise you can’t access the setup GUI anymore. So THAT took me some hours to figure out. The other strange thing is that the unit only offers 7 channels in the 2.45 GHz band, instead of the full 11 channels that are allowed in the US. I first tried to circumvent that by selecting another country in the setup menu, which resulted in 9 channels but still not the full 11 channels. But, as I found out later, if you select another country than USA in the setup, the power drops to 26 dBm instead of the full 30dBm. It took me a while to find that out (by accident), as it is not explained anywhere.Eventually I found how to add the missing channels (go to “webfig” in the GUI, then to “channels”, then you can manually add the missing channels but you need to know the exact frequencies that belong to each channel, meaning another Google search). So all in all, a difficult unit to set up, so I give it a 4, not a 5. But now that it is setup the way I wanted, it performs very well. Good strong signal and it only consumes 7 watts from the DC supply, allowing for power over Ethernet (POE), accepting anything between 8 and 30 V DC as supply voltage, that is a really nice feature. So if you are completely network illiterate, this one is not for you. But if you know little enough to be dangerous (like me), you should be able to get it to work.

works great
I am using this router as just a wireless access point and it works great. The signal is strong and reaches all locations in my two story house. It was a little complicated to setup as an AP only but I found information online to help me figure it out. A typical router configuration is the default configuration so that would be dirt simple to setup, just provide admin password and wireless shared key and you're good to go.
