The repeller comes with an infra-red (PIR) motion sensor which turns the device on when a warm body enters the controlled area. With the motion sensor, the theory is that cat learns to associate the noise with its own movement and is therefore much less likely to stop become desensitized to the noise. The device covers an 80 degree arc, to a distance of up to 23ft(7m), giving a total unobstructed working area of 184sq ft. Unlike most other repellers this allows you to cover a smaller area with the sensitivity dial. The repeller will give you the full 7m if the dial is fully round to the right; to decrease the distance turn to the left; this will help increase battery life as the repeller will cover the distance you want it to. If cats have a habit of feeding and fouling in your garden, it may take longer to achieve the desired effect. If you have a dog, it may be affected if it is allowed in the same part of the garden. The sound doesn't travel well through walls and fences, so it should not affect a dog in the house or a neighbour's dog. As with all methods involving animal behaviour, we can't guarantee effectiveness in every situation, however feedback from customers suggests that this device is effective in many situations. The device allows the changing of the frequency of the ultrasonic noise, potentially making it possible to target animals with hearing in different ultrasonic ranges, such as foxes and dogs. Dimensions: Height 10.5cm, Width 10.5cm, Depth 4.7cm.Our Effectiveness Guarantee If you're not satisfied with the performance of this product, return it to us within 45 days and provided you've had it running for at least a month, we'll refund the cost of the item (less postage).

OH MAN!!! CATS BE GONE...LONG GONE!!!
This thing is AWESOME!!! I have a 2003 Jaguar S type that honestly looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor.I park under the building where I live and my neighbor feeds all the feral cats in the neighborhood twice a day. And man those stinking cats were getting all up on my car and spraying all over it and fornicating on it and it had to be washed every day. I tried a car cover but what a hassle that is when you have to put it on and take it off by yourself every day. And I'm telling you there were A LOT of cats around my building and since I put this thing up on the wall by my car I haven't seen ANY CATS in the garage AT ALL!!! NONE!! I don't know what kind of critter problem you have but if it's cats buy this thing because it's OH MAN!!! CATS BE GONE...LONG GONE!!!And BONUS, the Batteries last for Months

Works in a limited arc/range
Our neighbor complained about our cat going over to her yard to poop, so we bought this device to set up in her yard as a deterrent. There were no English instructions about setting the device up. It was fairly easy to put batteries in and get it going, but no indication of what setting it should be on. We followed the advice of others who posted and we think we had it turned to the correct setting, but it has not prevented our cat from going over there at all. He does seem to avoid the area immediately in front of the device, but does not seem to deter him from traipsing about on any other part of the lawn adjacent to the device. Maybe the sound just doesn't bother him at all; I don't know. It might be effective for a very limited area from the device.

Better price and better construction
I purchased this product instead of the Cat Stop Ultrasonic Cat Repeller that I have bought in the past. I have a feral cat issue in my yard and thanks to Oregon feral cat programs I have little to say about this cat's freedom. I have tried to work with the owners but that did not resolve the issue. I had two Cat Stop devices and thought I'd try (mostly desperation) a concentrated effort of the two in the corner normally occupied by this cat. I have no real animosity toward the cat but I don't attract birds to my yard to be killed by a cat. The concentrated effort seemed to do the trick but this cat decided he'd stake out a new spot in the yard. I went to buy another Cat Stop device and saw this one on Amazon and liked the reviews and tried it out. I like it better for three reasons. First, it uses a metal stake that is screwed to the body. The Cat Stop is all plastic and it is hard to get the stake into dry ground (yes it is dry occasionally in Oregon) without damaging the stake or the clips that hold the extended stake. The metal stake is easier to install into the ground and being screwed to the body I feel it is more sturdy and less likely to snap. Second, I like that the battery compartment has a rubber seal and the cover is screwed to the unit. One of the Cat Stop covers was blown off the unit--by a leaf-blower or wind. I'm not sure how but I will give Comtech credit for replacing that while it was under warranty. However I feel it can potentially happen again and I'd have to pay for the replacement. The lack of a seal around the compartment door also makes it susceptible to moisture (i.e. Oregon when it isn't dry). Yes, it is a little more difficult to do a quick battery change but I feel that works for me and will keep the battery from shorting out or getting damaged by wet or the loss of the battery door. Lastly the unit has a variety of settings to adjust the strength of the unit. The Cat Stop doesn't have that option. Overall I feel it is a superior buy and it has the advantage of being less expensive. The only fault I will give to the company is a lack of documentation with the device that helps determine the settings you might start with for various purposes. The first one I bought does seem to keep the feral cat at bay. This is #4 for my yard (#2 Pestbye brand). Yes, it is annoying to have to spend more and more money to keep my yard my own and my birds protected from a nuisance cat but I'm glad there is a product that works and allows me the option to keep my yard cat-free. Thank you, Pestbye and Amazon.Update (3/27/2013) - #4 seems to be doing as well as #3 (Pestbye). I saw the feral cat once since I put up the device. I went out and increased the sensitivity and I haven't seen the cat since (in my yard). The yard behind my yard has a good neighbor fence (so people tell me it is called) where you can view the yard at the right angle looking through the spaced boards. I can see the cat moving around there. These owners also feed birds but apparently don't concern themselves with the cat roaming their yard. I mention this because the feral cat is that close to my yard but doesn't visit it. I've seen him close to the fence and watched to see if he would come over. He did visit once while I was out of town. I saw him the day I came back (before I got #4 Pestbye) and checked the two Cat-Stop units. One had stopped working which could explain why he wasn't bothered as much since the concentrated effort of the two seemed required for that model to work effectively on this cat. I've notice since I have set up this system with the two concentrated Cat-Stop units and the individual Pestbye units on a fairly high setting that I don't see ANY cats in the backyard. I do see cats in the front part but not in the back. I have to attribute their avoidance of the back area to the units. I'm considering a fifth unit to put in the front. I have a good row of rhododendrons that I've heard is a popular cat litter box for the neighborhood due to the amount of cat droppings seen when a leaf blower is used to clean out that area. I'd like to discourage the neighbor cats from using that area for their bathroom.

Worked For Me.
Neighborhood cats had all but killed a 12 x 30 foot patch of lawn in my back yard. I purchased two of these repellers and placed them to cover this area. After three weeks the grass had grown back and no new burn spots have appeared, suggesting the cats are leaving my entire lawn alone. Both repellers came with absolutely no instructions. An Internet search turned up a site in the UK that said for cats the frequency dial should be set between 3 and 5. Unfortunately there are no numbers on my versions. Assuming the total range was 0 to 10, I set the frequency dial pointing horizontally to the left, approximately where the 3 to 5 zone should be. I set the sensitivity dial to the same position to provide a 15 foot turn-on range. Any higher and wind would set it off. I also made sure to aim the repellers toward the north so the sun couldn't trigger them. The batteries lasted over four weeks. I am completely satisfied with this product, though instructions would have been appreciated.

Total waste of money
I bought this device as I had tried all ways to stop my cats jumping up on the kitchen food prep surfaces. I thought this might act as a deterrent - nope. As you can see from the photo, (the faint blue glow is the sensor), the cats did not care one bit, despite the frequency setting (of which I tried them all). In fact, one just sniffed around it, the other thought it was a toy. If you’re wondering why it was on the floor in this pic, it’s because I thought I would give it a test before placing it up high.Frankly, I feel this is likely a scam and a total waste of money so I would advise anyone thinking of getting one to invest in something else! If it was only one cat unaffected, I could understand it, but both...... Not likely.Looks like I’ll just have to keep looking!

Effective
I have found that this really works. This is the second one I have bought. The first one lasted 4 years before the battery connections corroded - which is to be expected as it is outside in all weather. The batteries needed replacing about every 3-4 months (I think battery life depends on how often it is activated - mainly by people walking past it) and each time I found myself thinking that maybe the device was no longer necessary as no cats were coming to the garden ....however after a couple of weeks the fouling begins again, thus providing ongoing evidence that this device is effective and needs to be continued. It does not appear to disturb the birds who use the garden feeders all the time.

Those pesky cats
I bought this item more in hope than expectation to be honest as I was sick and tired of the neighbourhood felines coming and doing their business on my lawn and I didn't think it'd go down too well with the district folk if I just shot the little blighters and that, being a peace loving kind of a fella, didn't really feel like the right thing to do anyway! So I set it up as per the instructions and for the first couple of weeks my lawn was devoid of any cat crap and I was busy patting myself on the back for a purchase well made .... but then the little rotters seemed to realise that I'd tried to get the better of them and proceeded to come back into the garden and, I'm almost sure, strut around in front of the repellant machine and drop their droppings. So, in short, it worked then it didn't and a shot gun and a prison term may be my only option!!!!

I can now lead a blissful poop-free life
Once upon a time a cat would poop in my garden, right outside the back door, it smelled and on unlucky days I might even step on it. Bad times. The devil was stealthy too, I never caught him in the act, I only found his... spoor.Since then I got the PestBye Battery Operated Waterproof Cat Repellent, or, as I call it to spice up my life the CAT OBLITERATOR. It has worked perfectly and my garden remains poop free, even after that batteries have run out the cat is so discouraged it dare not return. So why only four stars? Two reasons, one: it's ultrasonic squealing can still be heard by some humans who have better ears than mine and I am reliably informed it's terribly annoying. Two: The one time the cat returned it managed to get behind the CAT OBLITERATOR and was stuck on my windowsill, unwilling to risk it again until I rescued the damn thing.
