I have not tried using it to serve hot foods like spaghetti sauce or greasy tomato-based foods. I just love them for the "school days" vibe and have used these trays to serve hot lunches and sandwiches, like they did in school. Sorry I could not answer your question.

I bought them as gifts and they are used for pot luck dinners so I am unable to answer.

Not so fast... These are made of melamine which is only semi-safe. If you use them in the microwave, the material will dry out and discolor, shortening their useful life. However, they will not emit toxic chemicals or explode, so they are safe in that sense. Go to the manufacturer's website; they explain it all thoroughly.

Q: Can you get covers for them too?

As far as I know there are no covers for these.
