Cole & MasonCapstan Wood Pepper Grinder - Wooden Mill Includes Precision Mechanism, 6.5 inch

I bought this after buying and being disappointed in the Clifton set from Cole & Mason (the DKB Household company that distributes Cole & Mason products in this country was very responsive and good to deal with), mainly because of the inefficiency of grinding and the poor working of the coarseness adjustment, meaning you had to turn the grinder a lot to get a reasonable amount of salt and the coarseness adjustment was close to nonresponsive. But this grinder is just the opposite. I have it set on coarse grind using Himalayan salt, and it sends a wall of salt down with each turn. I've barely tried it on fine adjustment, but it did seem to work well on that, too. The top adjustment screw does loosen gradually with use, but is extremely easy to just tighten back down a bit and this is a total non-issue. It does leave a small residue of salt on your table or shelf when set down after being used, but it's easy to remember to just tap it a couple times to clear most of this before putting it back on the shelf. Again, to me, this is a total non-issue in comparison to how well it works. Filling it is easy, and its size, especially circumference which determines how well it fits in the hand and hence how easy it is to turn, is excellent. The wood that it's made out of gives it good coefficient of friction, so your hand doesn't slip when turning, even when moist. I'd guess the circumference of the base and top is just right for both men and women's hands. It's nice enough looking, just like in the picture. It's a pleasure to have found a salt grinder that works this well.

Have you ever been excited about getting a pepper grinder before? I think that’s a sign of age. But let me tell you, I was excited for this to come! It did not disappoint. The peppercorns come out perfect cracked and ground. Almost crushed. And yes, it can be adjusted. Sometimes simpler is better, and this is proof of that!

Bought as a gift to replace my Father's old mill.He raves about it! Said the grind is wonderful and he can adjust it with a little tension on the nut. It holds plenty of pepper and he enjoys the finish. Its smooth but soft and you don't lose your grip on it.The box it came in was rather lackluster, something out of a restaurant supply store.It was however wrapped in plastic inside and had a nice mini booklet on its cap with other products by Cole & MasonI ended up putting it inside a lava lamp container since its box was ugly. My 76 year old father was very "happy" to get a lava lamp at first. Think 6 year old getting a bag of socks and underwear. Once he opened it, we all had a good laugh.He says 5 stars

A few months ago I bought a highly-rated famous name brand manual pepper grinder for more money. It lasted about a month. "Product Support" was just a fairy tale. No product support.According to reviews, this baby performs well and has excellent product support.SO: I got it. I tried it out. It does a fine job grinding my mixed-size peppercorns to the desired coursenessbutthe output is pretty small. That is: it takes quite a bit of twisting to output the amount of pepper you might use when cooking (which is definitely one of the reasons I wanted a pepper grinder).I get about 1/8 tsp of fine-ground pepper per minute of frenetic grinding.Disappointing, but not a deal breaker. I will definitely continue using the grinder, but I wish I didn't have to work so hard at it.4 stars only because it takes so much "work" to get the pepper out.Pros?- Holds a lot of peppercorns- Seems to work fine with the assorted-type peppercorns (with corns of different sizes and colors)- Looks pretty nice (but note: not super-fancy. My previous crappy name-brand grinder looked like a work of art.)- Reviews claim great customer support. (I hope I don't need it.)- Comfortable to hold (but not so comfortable to twist. Maybe I'm too old for this style of grinder...)

I've hated all my pepper grinders to date, but this one finally was just what I'd been hoping to find. It is attractive, the right size, easy to use and above all it grinds the pepper in whatever size you desire easily. The mechanism inside is a good quality and from what I can determine should last a long time. Thank you for a decent product made with integrity!

I originally bought this 5 in pepper grinder because I was having issues with my grocery store pepper grinder. With the grocery store grinder, there was no way to adjust the fineness of the grind and the grind was way too coarse, so coarse that I would bite into large hard chunks of black pepper. I bought this 5 in pepper grinder because I wanted a grinder that could provide a very fine ground like how pre-ground black pepper comes and this grinder is able to do that. You can get a very very fine ground with this pepper grinder where the pepper is practically dust which I really like. Everything works really well with this grinder. The only con is the adjustment screw does come loose after using it for a while and then I need to retighten it but, this is not an issue for me.

Very smooth action, very easy to operate. However, left-handed folk may find it a little difficult to use. But if you grip the barrel of the grinder with your left hand and twist with your right, it will work a little better. Otherwise, this feels very well-made and grinds extremely smoothly.
