Hi, This umbrella does not have an automatic function. Automatic umbrellas are usually found in adult umbrellas. This is a child friendly umbrella and opens and closes fairly easy for kids but manually. I hope that this helps.

Depending how big your 8 year old is, it might be to small for him. But if he really likes Batman I would say no.

I'm not sure if we just got a bad one but I had to return it because it broke beyond repair the first time my son used it
