Much Dithering

Sweet as a meringue
I purchased this book for relief from the viciousness and sex scenes that must be waded through in so many of today's novels. Sweet and peaceful story. The book takes place in England between the wars. Does our heroine, who occupies nearly all her time with the "good works" that are expected of her, dare to go to the Hunt Ball?I will probably purchase the rest of the titles in this series, which seems to be written by different authors from the same time period and with similar-looking covers. Thanks, Amazon, for bringing back some of these oldies that I had no idea existed. They are a treat.

Great Read
Well written and so very entertaining! Always looked forward to reading this story at bedtime and in the morning in bed while waiting for my love to wake up.

Pleasant romance
Pleasant romance but I am not a fan of poor choices on the part of the heroine and the message that life in a village community is not worthy.

Fun and entertaining
Frivolous, frothy, fun! A light and entertaining read. Can’t wait to read more of Dorothy Lambert’s work. Love these Furrowed Middlebrow editions.

Fun Read
Having finished every book written by Miss Read, I was searching for another author who would help keep me from Dora Saint withdrawal. Dorothy Lambert isn't quite another Miss Read, but her writing is fun and entertaining. I've ordered more of Dorothy!

A Mini Austen
This is a delightfully fun and fluffy book, perfect for escaping these days of Covid-19 for a little while. Even when it was published (1938) it must have seemed old-fashioned, but in a really good way. The setting is a village that exists in a time warp, full of vivid personalities with perfect names (a Jazz-Age floozy named Jasmine, the social-climbing Murchison-Bellabys, the pompous Colonel Tidmarsh, a steely-eyed cougar named Ermyntrude - not to mention the village itself: Much Dithering). It would have done very well for the setting of an early Agatha Christie, but it's a comedy of manners, not murders. The plot holds no huge surprises - the joy of reading it is in seeing everything fall satisfyingly into place in the end.Dorothy Lambert was a very talented author, and her bio at the end of the book says she wrote 27 novels. I hope the publisher will be bringing out more of them. We could all use a few innocent laughs these days.

Boring Heroine
I really wanted to like this book, because I normally do love vintage books and it sounded so cozy, but I just couldn't finish. Got half way and gave up. The heroine was the most boring character in the whole novel - a virgin widow who had no idea that she was pretty despite three men falling over her and no initiative whatsoever, completely happy to be pushed around by a dowdy aunt and neglectful, jealous mother until the hero appears to take charge of pushing her round instead.

Disappointing
The 3 stars are a blend of 5 stars for the wonderful Furrowed Middlebrow project, and 2 stars for this book which is a good illustration of why some authors are forgotten and O/P. It has the stock village characters but they are 2 dimensional here. The outsiders in their midst are the villains, and they are either Italian, half-Italian, or have a Jewish ancestor. The unrecognized heir was not really an outsider. The paperback edition also has some proof reading problems including typo, obvious auto-spell-correction, and one missing line of text.

A gently humorous read
I thoroughly enjoyed this. It was a gently humorous read with a diverting range of characters. It was quite obvious almost from the start how it would turn out but this hardly matters ! The pleasure was in the journey. I know some reviewers thought it lacked pace but to me it had the rhythm of a minuet - it was about enjoying the experience, not of racing to the end. My only criticism is that the author has a tendency to explain the characters’ motivation repeatedly, as though the reader can’t quite be trusted to intuit what these might be.

Charming
Beautifully written and full of interesting characters with a gentle storyline. No violence or swear words just a relaxing nostalgic read. Looked for more of her books but there doesn't appear to be any more in kindle form more's the pity.

Poor editing of kindle version .
While I enjoyed the typically old fashioned story , I did not enjoy the very many typos and spelling mistakes in the kindle version of this !
