Fantastic game, but suffers from slight performance issues on the Switch.
Trails into Reverie is a fantastic JRPG and serves as one final hurrah to the Cold Steel arc before it moves into the next arc of storytelling. While Cold Steel is advertised to be finished at CS4, Reverie is essentially Cold Steel 5 and serves as the true final end to Cold Steel arc as whole as this story arc happens directly after the events of CS4 and features the same cast as characters as previous games, with a few new additions. It is mandatory to have knowledge of all 4 Cold Steel games, as well as the stories from Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure to experience this game in full.If you are wondering if it is worth diving into one final Cold Steel-esque game before the series moves into its next chapter, then my answer is YES. Reverie gives A LOT more spotlight on Lloyd and his companions, and features a new protagonist with their own party members. The overall story is shorter in length compared to previous games, however in return it features a roguelike dungeon system where you can level characters, form party members and traverse through randomly generated dungeon floors which provides tons of side-content and post-game content that is very reminiscent of how Trails in the Sky the 3rd is structured. Depending on your tastes, your mileage with this feature will vary. However, I found it to be very addictive as this feature alone provided me with another 70 hours of gameplay! The reason why this review is 4 stars and not 5 stars is because of the performance on the Switch. In order to compensate for the Switch's weaker hardware compared to its competitors, the resolution has been locked to a lower output and anti-aliasing has been disabled. Furthermore, the framerate feels capped to 30 FPS. These performance outputs make it harder to read text and will force you to look very close at the screen to read buffs and debuffs on characters in-battle. At times it strains my eyes when playing docked on a large HD TV. If one wants to experience this game in its full HD form with 60FPS, then stronger alternatives should be utilized. If you can look past the performance issues, then you have one fantastic send-off to the Zero/Azure and Cold Steel arcs on the Switch. I definitely recommend it.
