Small But Well-Made and Future-Proof
Works as intended. It checks the tire tread in 32nds of an inch up to an inch from 1/32 to 32/32. The gauge is sleek and easy to use; and it does not feel cheaply made. Definitely worth the extra couple of dollars--I only just purchased it but I can tell I will have this a very long time. Also, the edges on the support that the tire rests on are fairly sharp... If you're handy you'll find a use for it, I was able to use it as a box cutter for my other Amazon packages.

Best tread depth gauge I've ever known
This is best tread depth gauge I've ever seen, and I've worked in so many tire shops...it looks cool being silver, and that distinguishes it as belonging to me unlike the green/red cheap ones that float all over shop. The main thing that's important about this one is its SAE...I've NEVER worked somewhere where tread depth measurements have been requested in metric...and although metric is obviously better system than SAE, I do not need half of my tread depth gauge listing metric measurements. When I'm in a right wheel well, or in a hurry (walking outside at night in rain to BMW with barely any clearance to reach tread), I dont want to have to make sure I have the 32s facing me...it sucks when you take a measurement, and while pulling the gauge towards you to read it, it hits something and throws off reading...I just want a reading (IN 32s!!) the first time. This tool only reads in increments of 1/32" of an inch. It holds up a long time as long as no one bends it, and the metal tip wont cave into the gauge and give false readings. And it doesnt have the stupid hexagonal faces with metric and 32s. Everyone wants one like mine, I had a coworker pay me $15 for one of these once. Digital depth readers are stupid...they require batteries and why put so much technology or $ into a tread depth gauge? This one is simple, practical, and Milton makes good products...although I think they're tire inflators tend to be inaccurate.

Milton Reigns Supreme
Milton metal gauges always hit the mark for economical, reliable, and well-assembled tire gauges. This pocket-size gauge is great, and especially considering the USA manufacturing, the price is unbeatable.

Milton S-448 Tread Depth Gauge: The Essential Tool for Road Safety and Peace of Mind
When it comes to vehicle maintenance, few tools are as critical, yet often overlooked, as a quality tire tread depth gauge. I've tried cheap plastic ones, but they often stick or give inconsistent readings. The Milton S-448 is a massive upgrade and exactly what every car owner, mechanic, and safety-conscious driver needs. This is a tool you buy once and use forever! Accuracy & Reliability (5/5): This is where the Milton gauge truly shines. The calibrated bar moves smoothly and provides incredibly accurate and repeatable measurements in 32nds of an inch. Unlike digital gauges that rely on batteries, this simple mechanical design is always ready to go and completely trustworthy. Checking my tires takes less than two minutes, and I now have absolute confidence in my tire health and safety. Build Quality & Durability (5/5): The S-448 is built with a solid brass body and a durable steel measuring bar. It feels heavy and substantial in the hand—a sure sign of quality that confirms it will handle the grit and grime of a garage or roadside without issue. The brass construction means it won't rust or seize up like cheaper alternatives. This tool is clearly built to last a lifetime. Clarity & Ease of Use (5/5): The color-coded scale (Green, Yellow, Red) is a brilliant, instant visual indicator of tire condition: Green: Safe to drive (Good tread). Yellow: Caution (Getting low). Red: Replace immediately (Dangerous). This quick-reference system makes maintenance accessible to anyone, regardless of their technical knowledge. It slips easily into a glove box or tool pouch. Verdict: The Milton S-448 isn't just a gauge; it's a small investment in your safety and the longevity of your tires. Its premium brass build, precision calibration, and simple color-coded scale make it the best manual gauge on the market. Skip the flimsy plastic versions and get this one—you won't regret having this essential piece of equipment. A perfect 5/5 for precision, durability, and ensuring road safety

Stick it in your tires and save money!
What else can I say? I used this to measure some scrubs (used racing tires) - it worked! I got the device in record time, less than a week I think. When I opened it it was oily with clear oil or grease. It took 30 a whole seconds to wipe it off - which was no big deal, but I am glad I noticed it in time because I might have gotten the grease on a nice shirt or pair of pants. Because of the oil, it was not easy to hold and get a good measurement at first -but it worked fine after wiping a few times. Maybe they should wipe it off, or put a note inthe package to do so upon opening? It also saved me some money on my next purchase of scrubs! The used tire company advertises specific '32nd range, and these came up short. I took photos of my measurements and sent them to the company via email. The photos were not as easy to see as they could have been because the light I used was artificial and made a reflection in the chrome guage - making the tick marks harder to see in the photo. Also, it was hard at first to take the photos with one hand while the guage was slipping in my other hand becuase of the oil. Not the guage's fault though. Next time I'll get a bigger guage, or one that is not chrome and take the pictures in natural ambient light. In any case, the tire company agreed to discout my next set becuase they were short (litterally) a 32nd or two on the tires which were supposed to be about 5-6/32nds. A few bucks well spent!

This is the ONLY tire tread depth gauge that you will need...until you lose it, someone steals it from you or it somehow gets destroyed through a nuclear blast! Readouts are in "32nds" and are clearly marked. The construction is all aluminum and very sturdy. You don't have to worry about it breaking after a drop....or a few. The gauge moves smoothly without issues. Reset is simple by pushing the gauge readout back down. Buy the right quality tool for the job. Do it right the first time and you won't be wasting money buying replacements outside of losing it.

Very well made product. I bought two of them. I checked them against a machinist's ruler. It is very accurate. Takes a few minutes to get used to using. In the instructions on the rear side of the package says to wash hands after using. This unit contains lead. In reality, there is most likely very little lead used. I suspect the lead in in the ink of the markings on the measuring part. I would not worry about this small an amount. When I was a kid we used to use lead fishing weights. Lead was used in many products we used to use. I never met anyone contracting some condition from handling lead in a normal fashion. From my own knowledge and belief, as long as you are not drinking, breathing the dust, and eating from lead, there should not be any problems.

Does the job, quality tool, Would be nice if it were easier to clip to a pocket without the clip falling off, as the clip is clipped to the tool so you cant clip it to your pocket.

Handy to have, I should actually order two more, and have one in every single glove box. Takes the guess work out of "do I need new tires", and easily allows you to test and monitor wear in areas to see if alignment is out, and inflation is right.
