Great Read for Kids & Adults
This story was an addictive read. Perfect level for both kids and adults. Deals w scary topics in a mature way that’s easy to understand. Jezzie and her family are great characters, and the exploration of Gullah culture is woven into the story seamlessly. The magic is interesting, and the bits of horror that show up were fun surprises. Strongly recommend.

Excellent Read
For a 10 year old, this book kept her attention and was exciting for summer reading. She really related to the relationships/friendships that Jez was longing to have outside of the bond she shared with her twin. She loved the relatable context as her roots are also Geechee, and could identify a lot with what she read. I think this helped her develop more appreciation for family traditions and she really enjoyed this read. I look forward to more from this author, since this was the first time in a long time that we didn't have to ask her to read, she willingly grabbed the book and was hooked from that point forward.

Loved it - left me wanting more!
I've been a fan of Eden's work ever since she published Containment. Root Magic, however, is unlike any book I've read.Root Magic is geared towards Middle Grade, it has the perfect blend of humor, horror/darkness and history. I fell in love with the Turner family, especially Doc and Jez. Eden's skill with words puts you right into South Carolina in the 60's. You can taste the food that's being cooked, you can feel the weather and experience their life out on the edge of the marsh. The one thing I truly loved about this book is the education I received. With Eden's background, you know you're getting honest to goodness learning about the Gullah-Geechee along with root/conjure. Unlike in other horror media, this may be the first time it's been explained and not just lumped in as something people use for evil or bad intentions. There is only one downside - I want more. I want to see Jez and her twin Jay grow up. I want to see them more. I truly hope we get a series of books, because there is so much more I want to learn and experience through the characters eyes and through Eden's words.Go read this when you get a chance. You will not be disappointed.

SO GOOD
I read 580 books in 2021, and this was in the top 3. I couldn't even wait six months before I had to reread it. Such an excellent story! This book had me researching, it was so EXCITING to read a book from the pov of such an interesting culture, and the story is truly wonderful! It has horror elements (HORROR LITERATURE, very age appropriate for an MG audience), fantasy elements, mystery elements - basically it was just wonderful and the audio is fantastic as well. I'm so happy to have this beautiful physical copy for my shelves. PLEASE WRITE MORE, MS ROYCE!

Different and enjoyable
This book has turned out to be one of my favorite reads this year. I love the story and the characters so much. I felt like i knew them as i was reading. I especially enjoyed learning something new about the Gullah people of South Carolina. This book drew me in from the start and still resonates with after turning the last page. A true masterpiece. I would love to read more about thes characters.

Wonderful!
The storytelling was so fluid and engaging. Root Magic is Black Family Magic! In the face of anything trying to tear us down, if we stay together our joint strength, including that passed down from our ancestors, will help us endure, overcome and succeed! I'm sharing this with friends and family.

Wonderful! Twists and turns throughout the book
Great story! Royce created loveable family characters that the reader can really care about, in a story that sees children standing in their power and adults doing their best to protect them.

An uplifting and a heck of a scary book
I remember being enthralled with 'The adventures of Tom Sawyer.' Being pitched into a world I knew little of living in Ireland many, many years ago. So, to, was I transported into the world of Root Magic and the twins. I only read one chapter a night, reread it before turning out the light. Childhood fears, living in a small community where everyone knows your business, the heat, the crops - all contributed in placing me there. I was transported every night. I shivered with the creepiness of the hag and the creature in the mud. I cried, too, moved by Jez's compasion, her strength, her true self. And I wanted to read on after I finished the book. To find out what happened next.
