Excellent, thorough history of the Western European resistance
What a splendid book this is. Wide-ranging, detailed, written with a generosity of spirit and a thorough mastery of materials and subject. This is serious history, and highly recommended. Some inevitable, but relatively minor, infelicities in the American translation - Hugh Dalton was President of the Board of Trade, not “Minister of Commerce”, which is not a role that has ever existed in British government, and there are occasional misleading references to “Free France” when what is meant is the unoccupied Zone governed by Vichy.
