i was surprised to find out that it really works. the better sound was like a multi- thousand dollar upgrade for my mandolin.

Any issues of instrument tone are, of course, subjective. There is a lot of debate about the worth of the ToneRite on Mandolin Cafe. Probably elsewhere too. I drank the Kool-Aid and bought one. Still not sure.All it seems to do is apply vibrations to the strings. The intensity is variable through the control built into the cord. To turn it on/off, rotate the knob all the way CCW. There is no variation in frequency. It's just a buzzer.It looks like it would fit a guitar, too. The base of the ToneRite has rubber feet that catch the strings; no reason it wouldn't work for 6 strings just as well as 4.

It was impossible to get any technical specifications for this product before buying. All the available information (website and product reviews) just give anecdotal claims and non technical descriptions of how it functions. I wrote their company an email and they did not respond. Even the patent application is devoid of the technical specifications regarding vibration frequency range and amplitude. I bit the bullet and bought one of these anyway. It isn't useless, but an inexpensive aquarium pump with a glued on rubber mount to hold it on the bridge would have done the same function, sans the intensity control. In my experience blasting the instrument with clean sound that is similar to the frequency range the instrument produces, is far more effective. But it is also much louder to deal with. It was at least worth trying, but it would have been nice to know the specifics before buying.

Most quality wooden string instruments have to be "broken in" to get the full benefit of their quality woods. Constant playing can accomplish this but it takes months, and maybe even years. The ToneRite can do this in a week. It simulates the string vibration to "break in" the instrument very well. It will not make a cheap instrument sound good. It will only bring any instrument up to it's full potential.The ToneRite slides onto the strings and attaches itself so it will work whether the instrument is lying down or standing upright in a stand. It's quiet, easy to operate and effective.The ToneRite is highly recommended for professional musicians who have purchased quality instruments and want the instrument to sound the way it should.

I used to place my instrument in front of a loud sterio unit for a day and then go jam. The Tonerite is 10 times better and will quickly play in an instrument without all the noise. Seems like the tone and volume is better every time I pull it off the tonerite. Will never be without one again.

I had one for a short time. I used it on my 1936 Gibson Mandolin. What was I thinking? This is a very stupid concept to begin with, instruments are always awake. The players my fall asleep but guitars and mandolins never sleep. This is a snake oil sale to the 10th power. I came out of the coma and returned it. Your money and it is hard to come by, use your power of reason before you buy?

What a difference this makes! ToneRite made a difference with both my custom built F style and a mediocre A style that I made myself. Wakes up you instrument when you haven't played in a while too!
