Q: What am I missing? It came with no instructions except to hook & lift??

Just hook the tank and lift with the handle on the gauge. The arrow on the gauge will show how much propane is left in your tank.

As long as the weight of a full propane tank doesn't exceed the weight range of the scale, yes it will work. Remember, the "20-lb" nomenclature of a standard grill-sized LP tank refers to the capacity (in pounds of liquid propane) the tank can hold. For example, if the empty tank weighs 22 pounds, and a "full load" of propane weighs 20 pounds, your scale must be able to report 42 pounds of weight. I would approach the problem like this: weigh the tank when empty, then weigh the tank after filling; it should weigh 20 pounds more. If it doesn't, and your propane dealer is charging you for 20 lbs. of propane, then he's cheating you.

Q: does this work for RV tanks?

It It's a simple weight scale calibrated to 5 gallon propane tanks. So it would not be accurate for anything larger. I also use an inline pressure gauge that measures the amount of pressure left in the tank. It does not require lifting or moving the tank and works well for me. You simply hook it to the tank, and the line to the gauge. Sells for around 15 dollars on Amazon. Just search for "propane tank gauge".

Q: My grill a clamp to fasten the tank in an enclosed area below the grill. How can I use this scale in such a confined space and what about the clamp?

My Grill Guage scale red needle does not return to empty after weighing . It generally returns to a perpendicular white area position . I can reset it when I reset the black needle . Is it defective ?
