Anne McCaffrey - I miss you
I was handed a copy of "dragon flight when I was 13 and since then I have read every "Pern" book that I could get my hands on. They are so well written that you forget that you are reading and can visualize them in your head. I am a huge fan of Sci-Fi and Fantasy and I love it when the Author can write in a way that allows you to see the characters not just read about them. The Dragonriders Of Pern is one of the best series of books that I have read. I found that I could not wait for the next book. When I would sit down to read one, I would tend to forget about the things that I needed to do and read the book until it was done. I couldn't put it down. I look forward to more books in this series if she has more to give.I return to this book every few years. The story is fantasy, but the situations are human. On a backdrop of dire danger to the people - we watch the characters learn trust - well not all of them, leadership, and love.

The story continues, but where does it go.
The story continues in the dragonriders saga. An interesting continuation of the tales bringing to a temporary end the original trilogy. Expanding some of the characters and storylines it focuses, as the title suggests, on Ruth the white dragon and Jaxom. While on the whole the book was readable I did not find it as engrossing as I expected wondering, at times, where the tale was ultimately going. I may not have been in the right mood for this book expecting, after the Harper trilogy, a more adult solid and encapsulating approach. However having said that it rambles along nicely with some engaging twists and turns, that perhaps could have been explored more, and a recommended read for those interested in the genre. Should be read on its own but to make real sense needs to be read in the recommended order in the dragonrider series.Enjoy!

A Tale that draws the Reader with it.
Revisiting a series I read over twenty years ago reveals memories and revitalized me interest in the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre. An excellent author who can take the reader on an incredible journey.

my favourite author
I stumbled upon the Anne McCaffrey, Pern, books in my teens. They are all intelligently written with complex geography, astronomy and sociology of the world where they are based. Convincing stories with logic to their origin and events, despite being deemed science fantasy, I would argue that they are more bordering upon science fiction. McCaffery understands humanness making events and actions of both individuals and social groups plausible and intriguing. I didn't realise quite how complex and academically well written these books were until I began to read them to my son (who is actually named after the central character in this particular book because both myself and his dad loved the books so much). I bought this book for my son, so he can have his own copy of the book where his name originated.

The Pern series is generally good, and this is one of the best
I got this to replace the paperback copy that I had previously

After this volume, it's all downhill.
Third, or fifth, in series depending how you count, and last of those really worth reading, as the fifteen or so volumes to follow weren't really up to standard, as always happens in extended works. Even this one begins to suffer a little from overblown petty dialogue and self indulgent whimsy, but is important for the way it pushes the original story concept on to a conclusion. After this it's all downhill.

Excellent
The runt, white dragon Ruth, being raised by Jaxom at Ruatha Hold, surpasses the expectations of the all by surviving. Jaxom ready to take over leadership of his Hold must wait because of the uncertainties of the time. Old time dragon riders are unable to adapt to the societal changes, which have occurred during the four hundred years since the last pass. Tension increases between current population and old timers. Jaxom is finally allowed to begin training Ruth to fight thread, but can't do it where ground crews might see him. When a queen egg is stolen from Benden Weyr, it appears that dragons might fight the old timers dragons. Jaxom secretly returns the queen dragon to prevent this from occurring. One of Anne McCaffery's best books in the Dragonrider series. Many twists of plot and surprising discoveries.
