Q: There is no release clip. How does you even put this on?

I've used this style for a long time and, once the dog is familiar with it and realizes it means "we're going for a walk", they become pretty good at just stick their head into it. I always have the chain side up so there's no risk of catching the eyes with a prong.

Q: Are the prongs rounded on the xl size? according to the picture of the sizing they look flat. the only one rounded is the small.

I have the medium size and the ends are rounded. Works great for my shepherd.

Your question isn't clear. If you're talking about the prongs you can spread the prongs to make it harder to disconnect.
