Paris Was a Woman: Portraits from the Left Bank

The Women of 20's Paris
A group portrait of female ex-pats in Paris in the 20’s and 30’s, with the usual cast of characters: Gertrude Stein, Sylvia Beach, Natalie Barney, et al. Fascinating stories and enviable life styles (many independently wealthy). Great photos, too. However, the writing left much to be desired. Once again, you have a biographer who takes an uncritical, if not absurdly defensive position in regard to her subjects. Their faults are quickly glossed over or made the consequences of someone else’s action, usually a man’s. Gertrude Stein and Alice Toklas’s collaborationist actions during the occupation are ignored (one would need read Janet Malcolm for the details) and Natalie Barney’s sex addict behavior is ascribed to a “tireless heart” (better read Suzanne Rodriguez’s bio for a fuller picture). But if one can ignore these editorial asides and the biased reportage, this is an informative and entertaining book.

Excellent...
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Women's History, Women in Paris, Women in the Arts of just a new way to look at the things that are always left out of history books. Gives a new way of looking at the art and times of Paris during those years. One of the best things about the book are the amazing photographs. Finally, pictures that are FULL PAGE and fabulous. Just a great book in every way.

Loved this well researched and detailed book of the lesbian and expatriot women at the turn of the last century.
Lesbian history buffs should not miss this gem and I would highly recommend the film with the same name too. This would also be interesting to anyone who studies Paris at the turn of the last century. The authors hardly leave anyone out and the people at that time and place were so fascinating. Filled with great characters and important history.

The photos are wonderful.
This is a fascinating book! I have read much about writers' and other artists' experiences in Paris, but they were all men. It is so refreshing to read about women's experiences. The photos are wonderful.
