Brilliant book about a brilliant man
This is a very inspiring story. Most of us would be very happy with one of his many successes. I can only recommend this book.

Poor picture quality.
This book was a huge disappointment for the price paid (£22). I can't comment on the written content as I returned the book straight away for a refund. The B&W pictures (no colour) were all in a light grey/lighter grey instead of graduating from black through to white, so the contrast was poor. Some of the extracts from newspapers and the like were nigh on impossible to read. This surprised me as I have other Backbeat books which are good quality throughout and I have been pleased with. So, the 2 stars solely relates to the physical book quality.Instead, I bought a second hand copy from elsewhere, described as in Good condition (£6 postage paid). It arrived in excellent condition, very good picture contrast and most are in colour! It also has a dust jacket, and to cap it all was signed by Jim Marshall. What a result after the initial disappointment.UPDATE July 2022: I am pleased to say that having now read my copy of this book that I found it a very interesting read - the initial section covering Jim's early life up to and including the formation of the company was detailed enough, the author being fortunate to get ample first hand memories from Jim. The section on models focuses on the 90s onwards up to the point of publication (circa 2003). The section on the factory tour was also valuable - especially with the much improved, and in colour, picture quality of my example. There then follows a Top 11 (get it?) coverage of fave models across all eras which was of great interest. So in fairness to the author, I have upped the star rating to 4.

Good enough read
Written primarily for the US market I reckon. The cover photo shows Jim wearing what looks to me like a baseball jacket - definitely an American trait. The book barely touches Jim's early career, missing out a section on my own interest in Marshall amps which was the Artiste valve series. The second part of the book concentrates on Marshall's influence on US bands which is great if you're from that side of the pond. Still, a good read. Read this and you'll know more about the Three Kings of Rock Music - Leo Fender, Les Paul and Jim Marshall.

It goes to 11.
As a rock music enthusiast I'd taken for granted that most of the big talent used Marshall tube amps. But why, and why not some other manufacturer (like Vox)? The author answers that question with the history of the inventor and the evolution of a peculiar amplified sound that Clapton, Townshend, Jeff Beck, Hendrix and all the musicians of the period could hear in their heads but not find in an amp. Includes a section of the various amp offerings, tube types, quality of sound, heads and cabinets, stacks and toys.

Over all very informative....good history of the man behind the making of the amplifier that would set the bar so high that amp manufacturers are still trying to capture the sound that made history.
