Q: what orientation should the seat be in before screwing the stem in? I cracked one once and don't want to repeat

seat needs to enter with recessed hole in brass body. hold stem in position and tighten body only.

Q: what keeps the rubber seat and spring in place while screwing in the stem?

It shouldn’t push out the seat completely. It won’t set firmly inside. Once you push the stem in, it won’t fall out. If that helps at all.

Q: Anyone have issues with this stem spinning when you shut it off? Mine spins when it should grab and shut off, and still leaks

No, but I did have issues with one of the rubber seals. The largest/fatest one I think. I ended up using the old ones and it worked perfect.
