Rival Gardens: New and Selected Poems

Poetry that elevates everyday life
Connie Wanek's poems resonate. She manages to take small details and show how they relate to the life of the speaker in her poems and then to the common parts of our shared existence. Whether its a carrot being pulled from a garden, a pickle in the refrigerator, a child returning home from college, or a skiier who prefers XC in a cemetery, these poems of everyday life will quietly blow your mind and elevate your consciousness. Her poetry is easy to understand and access, but at the same time, so well written with deep meaning. Anyone would enjoy these poems who enjoy exemplary writing...but those of us who are women, who live in the midwest, will acquire an additional layer of appreciation for her poetry.

Poems to live with everyday
This is a delightful collection of poems that touch on living as we do it day to day. Conversations with a daughter. Planting, walking, garlic and a broom. Each given the gentle observation of a poet's gifted eye. Former Poet Laureate, Ted Kooser brings us this collection as the second in his Contemporary Poetry series. Truly a gift.

Wonderful Poetry!
Such a wonderful poet. I also gave a copy of her book to a friend who loves it as well. Genuine, accessible poetry with just right metaphors. Highly recommend this book of poems. It's one I will read again and again.

Connie Wanek is a wonderful poet. This is a marvelous introduction to her work -- but reading her other books too would be better!
