Cary Grant: The Vault Collection (DVD)

Great Films Marred By Poor Quality Control
In light of all the wonderful restoration work being done by Universal of late, it pains me to take their home video division to task. Specifically, the recently released Cary Grant Vault Collection set. Many of the titles included I already own and I re-purchased just to get the handful of new to video titles in the set. I’ve screened two of the new ones (THE WOMAN ACCUSED and LADIES SHOULD LISTEN) and both exhibit severe audio problems, specifically a loud hum. This sort of audio problem turned up occasionally in old 16mm TV print, which which I’m certain these derived from. I realize that the extant elements of the old Paramount’s is a mixed bag as MCA had started to dispose of original 35mm elements before UCLA intervened, but I feel Universal’s engineers could have done something to minimize these audio problems. Am I glad I purchased this set? Of course, but I feel really let down that they saw fit to release these with no apparent effort to correct or at least minimize the problem.

The outer box says it all: charming, sophisticated and debonair, Cary Grant is...
These movies are from the 30's. Some rare gems. But I really wanted to leave seller feed back. Described as 'new'. The case was scratched, dented, and the corners badly scuffed and worn. The shrink wrap was renewed, obviously not the original. The outer box is supposed to hold 2 shrink wrapped dvd cases. The comedy dvd case was not shrink wrapped. Inside the piece that holds two dvds was broken at the connection point (probably an earlier return). The third dvd was not connected into the case, and sliding around during shipping, caused light scratches. I would say that is definitely 'used' condition. So far they all play fine and I love these old Cary grant movies.

Worst Cary Grant movies
I've had time to watch the DVDs of Cary Grant so I'm changing my review. If you love Cary Grant do not buy this set. He has very few appearances and very little to do with any of the movies and they were all really bad be flick type movies nothing 4 after he became famous. This was a huge letdown

These movies are not his best, and in many
These movies are not his best, and in many, Grant is still finding his voice and style, but you can see him evolving through these early to mid 1930s films. Even the movie-making styles are evolving here. Some scenes in some movies from the early 30s tend to be dragging for modern audiences as they lack background music and take their time, But you can see how the pace gets faster with later films. . Having said that, there's some solid entertainment here--The Eagle and The Hawk, the Last Outpost and Big Brown Eyes, come to mind. If you're a serious fan of old Hollywood movies and Cary Grant, this is a worthy addition to your collection.

The movies are great and good video quality
It would have 5 stars if Madame Butterfly had a better ending, shame on you Cary Grant, lol, actually shame on the writer, what a mean and unfeeling story to plot out. Otherwise the other movies so far are great. We haven't watched them all, just reporting the quality is good and some of the videos we have never seen before.

Unbearable Sounds Sinks Gambling Ship
Having looked forward with much anticipation to seeing five of Cary Grant's films that had until now had been unavailable on DVD, we were terribly disappointed that the very first one we chose to view, Gambling Ship, delivered a most-distracting, egregious, continually disturbing hum of varying intensity throughout its presentation. Abysmal! We put a man on the moon in 1969, and we can't even clean up the hideous hum in a depression-era movie in this boom-time of audio technology!M. MengFullerton

Not the greatest Cary movies.
If you love Cary Grant as I do it's worth buying this set. The movies are very old, & most I've never even seen before. He's adorably irresistible as usual & really young too, but these are really early Cary movies & the plots aren't very good.

Decent quality transfer of lesser know early Grant films
Decent quality transfer of lesser know early Grant films, almost all of which I had not seen before. Starting in 1932 and going thru 1936. Not anywhere near HD quality but better than YouTube's. Cary Grant in most was the suave character he developed later but good enough for good movie roles.

TREASURES FROM THE 1930s
Eight dramas and eight comedies starring Cary Grant. I would rate these as 2.5 to 3.0 on a scale of four.
