If you want a good background on Calif weather and the indigenous peoples, this is the book. It is a text book, so not a great read but has a lot of information about pre european California. It really makes you wonder, what is "normal" California weather?

You would be hard pressed to find a better review of California's prehistory. This book also covers the paleoenvironment of California by region. This book is thorough and a good starting point for anyone interested in the prehistory of California.

I think this is a concise synthesis of California's prehistory, though it does leave something to be desired.
