A piece of rubber
for your violin. Makes the sound less soundy.Isn't this kind of a given? This is also the correct orchestral mute to use. Not a practice mute. Mutes far less than the traditional "full bridge" mute. This is what the first violinist uses when Hilary Hahn is the soloist.I just leave it below the bridge until I need it. Stays on my violin pretty much forever.

Does not work - Defective
Wow. I’m f$&@’d. I needed it urgently for a performance. The purpose of the mute is to straddle the bridge snugly. The ”tonsil” (whatever the tiny part that is supposed to go over the bridge) of this mute is stuck so close to the main body, it won’t even go over the bridge. With my bad eyesight, I just kept pushing it against the bridge and accidentally knocked it over. Then the sound post got dislodged. Had to take it to a luthier. Later, on closer inspection, I realized the product was utterly defective. I tried opening up the tonsil part but it won’t give, and it looks like the rubber is brittle and can break. I mean, it’s cheap, but I cannot fathom how the manufacturer can f%^*-up a simple product any further than this. Amazon, please do your quality control and don’t just sell any random garbage.

Buy a mute somewhere else
I've played for 30+ years and these were the WORST mutes I've ever had. They are very thick and difficult to get onto the bridge- in part because of the thickness and also because the cuts/holes aren't well placed. They work as a mute, but it was not the right fit for a violin. perhaps these were for a viola.

Convenient
I've lost a few mutes, so I'm glad they came in package of three. Was using a hard mute in the meanti?e, but the music doesn't usually give you time to get it on and off.

Not terrible, but need to be adjusted
I bought these for my 5 string fiddle as a way of muting it a little more while I practice. The mutes are not molded properly, as other reviewers have mentioned. They need to be cut a bit - if you have an Xacto knife, they are quite easy to adjust.
