Beautiful, Simple, Exact, Crazy: Mathematics in the Real World

Book was in absolutely new condition. This is a very academic book. My Phd. Mathematician husband will love it.

This is a relatively new introductory college text for non-mathematicians developed by two experienced teachers of mathematics. It includes topics in what I would call "finite math", and what others might describe as "college math with no calculus". The subtitle describes it as "Mathematics in the Real World". Here are some of the chapter headings: Algebra, Exponents, Logarithms, Finite and Infinite Series, Modular Arithmetic, Probability, and Statistics. The topics, examples and problems are all well-chosen and well taught by these excellent teachers.

Interesting, entertaining book about a wide variety of math applications. A lot of fun.

In this book, the authors cover quite a variety of mathematical topics, featuring mainly algebra, including exponents, logarithms and series, as well as probability and statistics. Each chapter has its special focus topic in which the particular mathematics of interest is introduced, followed by practical, real-world applications. Plenty of examples populate each chapter in order to give the reader a good sense of how problems in this area can be solved.I found reading this book to be most enjoyable. The authors are clear and concise in their topical presentations as well as in most of their derivations/proofs; however, I did find a few of the latter a bit awkward to follow compared to the same derivations/proofs in other texts.I agree that this book can be quite useful in a university mathematics course aimed at non-mathematics/science majors, as proposed by the authors. But, I also believe that it can be enjoyed by science and mathematics enthusiasts, like me, who just want a pleasant review of some of the basics as well as to relish the amazing variety of real-world applications in which these can be used.
