Great film!
I love this movie! I saw this film decades after it came out, and I can't stop watching it. Storyline is great, actors did an outstanding job. Very dark film full of mystery. A much darker film than the movie "Hardcore" staring George C. Scott, which came before it (similar story).

A Movie that Sticks With You!
1999’s 8mm is probably one of the most disturbing yet compelling movies I’ve ever watched in my life. The film balances the right amount of mystery and suspense to keep the viewer on their toes!

Get ready to see what a 'monster' REALLY looks like.
Nicholas Cage delivers an outstanding performance in this thought-provoking and very disturbing film. This film illustrates the taboo world of 'snuff' films and gets up-close and personal with the people who make them. As you dive deeper into this world during the movie, your innermost beliefs about good and evil will be altered. Some for better. Mostly for the worst. The movie ends with the final encounter of the very face of evil, played by James Gandolfini, who delivers an outstanding performance in this role. The movie's final message is this: as humans, we have the capacity to commit atrocious acts against others. We also retain the capacity to show incredible love and compassion. None of us is all bad. None of us is perfectly good. We all have good and bad impulses that we must reconcile within ourselves every day. At times, people do inhumane and unspeakable things to others. Due to our fundamental flaws, you and I are just one or two bad decisions away from becoming a murderer or rapist. The 'monster' we envision doesn't look anything like a monster with claws, fangs, and weapons. Look in the mirror. The monster looks like you. And me. It's anyone and everyone. That is what makes this movie so powerful -- how much it shoves reality in your face. You'll never forget this movie.

Film Noir With No Restraints
This is clearly a film noir film -- a private detective is hired for a case with twists, turns, and nastiness. But it was done after the Age of Censorship, and so has no restraints. The result is a lot darker than I am comfortable with. It isn't the /idea/ of determining whether a bit of porn is a snuff film or not that is the problem, it's the (sadly, I suspect) realistic portrayal of the milieu that is unrelievedly repulsive. The actors all do a fine job, whether portraying scumbags, lawyers, or more normal types. And the protagonist is definitely affected by what he finds, which seems realistic to me.I like classic film noir. But they were kept in line by the censors -- that is to say, they had Adult Supervision, something this film lacks.

Un des meilleurs films avec Nicolas Cage. Très bon scénario avec un Joachin Phoenix extra bien avant Napoléon de Ridley Scott. Film un peu glauque par moments, mais qui se suit avec intérêt. A voir absolument.
