Heart-wrenchingly beautiful
Before I get into the review, i just want to get it out there, that if things in life are not right at the moment, and you are feeling the brunt of that, please don't pick this book up. Only do so when things are a little settled. Now with the warning out of the way, here is my review.I don't think i have cried soo much in my life while reading a book. This was a beautiful but a very emotional and heart wrenching read. I mean there were times that i had to put it down, because I just felt disgusted by the events that took place in the world history and how it destroyed families and lives of people. While reading this account i felt that Eddie Jaku was a very strong man, and somebody with a lot of grit to survive and help others to survive as well. He went through horrendous times which were spoken about in such detail that you felt as if you were watching it happen right infront of your eyes.I loved the fact that having survived such trauma he was able to still remain optimistic in life, and was able to find happiness and a sliver of peace at the end.His teachings are eye opening and will always stay with me."Happiness is in your own hands and nobody else. It doesn't fall from the sky."This one was a precious read for me.

Must read.
Makes you realise how lucky you are, how small your problems are, how to find kindness in the darkest of times and how to be happy for the simple reason that you are breathing.

PROFOUND LESSONS FOR THE HUMAN RACE
Having read Viktor Frankl's 'In Search of Meaning' a much earlier publication of his experiences as a prisoner in concentration camps, I found Eddie Jak'u's account equally engrossing. He describes the horrors of the holocaust in graphic and disturbing detail. The Nazi captors weren't the only antagonists. He explains how his fellow countrymen, former friends and colleagues became enemies, under the spell of Hitler's regime, torturing and murdering. The Germany he'd been so proud of, was lost in the horror of war. They committed terrible atrocities, and worse, they enjoyed it. They thought they were doing the right thing. Even those who could not fool themselves that the Jews were the enemy did nothing to stop the mob.Eddie's account is a frightening real account of how people can change in wartime and much surely be one of the strongest reasons why we must do all we can to foster love not hate in our lifetimes. His philosophy of love and compassion got him through the terrible ordeal and his commitment to a loving and caring attitude is a glowing testimonial for us all.

Excellent!
This book is a NECESSARY read for young and old. It emphasizes family, friendship, education, and resilience. It also illustrates the importance of joy, of encountering old friends and making new ones, and the importance of resilience, hope, and love. It taught me how necessary it is for parents to strive for their children’s education and happiness, but also to let them go. It taught me also that, despite extreme suffering, including exposure to violence fueled by hate or by indifference, life can be lived in a present which does not fear the future but rather goes towards encounter, family, service, sharing one’s possessions and gifts with others. The horrors of the period when he was living in concentration camps are clearly stated, and what is surprising, and most fortunate for him, are the warming, healing acts of generosity by both friends and strangers. The epigraphs to the chapters are important.
