I thought I'd do a little comparison since I wished I'd had one when I was shopping for tongs.I got tired of messing around with lousy awkward tongs, so I got some of these Vollraths with the coated handles/no hinge and a pair of the 47309's/hinged, both in 9 1/2 inch. The Jacob's Pride are nearly twice as expensive as the 47309's, for good reason. The JP's have wider handles, better grip, and perform more like an extension of the hand. They're both good tongs, but if money's not an issue I'd say go with the Jacob's Pride. They can't be beaten and there's no hinge that can ever break on them.The 9 1/2" long tongs are the size that I use the most and feel most comfortable with.

I've used this brand of tongs in my home kitchen for over a decade. Other than a few places where the insulated coating has rested against the edge of a hot skillet, they show no signs of wear and tear. I use them, toss them in the dishwasher, and hang them up for the next use. This style of tong is so much easier to use than the more expensive ones they sell in the housewares stores. There are no springs, no scissor handles to grasp and operate - just use these basic tongs like extensions of your hands. Minimizes wear on the muscles in the hands and wrists. I have several different sizes and colors, and use them daily.

I bought these for home use after so many home use tongs ended up being total garbage. These have solid construction, thicker steel than the average tong, easy to clean. The grip is molded tightly to the steel and feels nice in hand. Hopefully the last tongs I'll ever need to buy, I see these lasting a very long time.

I’ve worked in kitchens for over 20 years. This style of tongs are the best. They offer the most dexterity and will hold up for years. It’s all about the hinge point. And this design is my favorite.

These tongs are a simple, but brilliant design. No springs to fight and easy to clean. They are like an extension of one's fingers, which is what tongs should be.
