A Guide to the Knobstone Trail: Indiana's Longest Footpath (Indiana Natural Science)

Trail guidebook
Useful. Trail guide format. It is a bit dry. I will take it with me when we hike the knobstone.

Know before you go: Kindle version
The first half about history of the trail was not only interesting but renewed my appreciate for the dedication and effort it takes from a few inspired individuals and a hoard of volunteers to establish a trail where none existed.Second half with trail detail came up short in the Kindle version. Using an iPhone 11 + Kindle app, elevation graphs were very poor quality; topo maps were hazy at best. If you're thinking of using this as your hiking or backpacking guide, go for the print edition instead.

Wander Indiana... Take a hike!
‘A Guide to the Knobstone Trail’ is a very nice introduction to the Knobstone Trail and it includes some history of the trail and surrounding area, and information about some of the local flora and fauna you might encounter on the trail; but the book should not be confused with an actual ‘trail guide’, the difference being in how the information is presented. With the exception of local area trail closings or rerouting due to recent storm damage or tree harvesting, all of the necessary information is included in the book but it is presented in an awkward format that may have you flipping back and forth between the pages for maps and information from three separate data tables.I suggest also purchasing the waterproof map titled ‘Knobstone Trail, Indiana’s Longest Footpath’ even though the map is broken into small sections in the book. The map is published and sold by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources; it is also available from the Hoosier Hikers Council’s online store.

Still Great Info, though slightly dated
Our family found Strange's "Guide to the Knobstone Trail" to be an invaluable asset to use as we hiked the trail in May 2018. The information about the relative steepness of various sections of the trail was useful, and the warnings about areas where the trail had been mangled by ATVs and horses helped us prepare. The book is slightly out of date after seven years, as the starting trailhead - Mile Marker - has been moved to a parking lot inside the Deam Lake SRA gates; this adds about a half mile to the trail, and has moved all the mile markers accordingly, so that when Strange says something is at Mile Marker 10, it's really closer to MM10 1/2. Also, there is an additional trailhead added at Pixley Knob Road, which wasn't in existence when Strange wrote. All in all, a good tool to help hikers on the trail.

A little outdated.
It’s a great book. The history of the trail is enjoyable but unnecessary weight if you plan to carry it.I’m rating it 4 stars because the book is older and there are some changes to the trail that have been made since it was written.

Info good, mile markers seemed off.
Information good but miles seemed off. I wonder if there was rerouting since publication. Maybe due to tornado?

Very well done KT guidebook
Beautiful pictures of the Knobstone. Well written history of how the trail was developed and nice mile by mile hiking guide. Hikers planning to hike the Knobstone should check the Indiana Department of Natural Resources website for the latest trail conditions. A long section of the trial sustained severe damage from a tornado in March of 2012 and parts of the trail will remain closed until sometime in 2014. This is the link for the trail updates. [...]

Great book for the Southern Indiana Hiker
I've completed the knobstone several time. I ordered it as a gift to some people who are hiking the KT for the first time. I ended up reading it myself first cover to cover before passing it on. The author took great lengths to describe the trail, it's history, and features of interest along the way. Highly recommend Strange's book to anyone interested not only in hiking, but the flora and fauna of Southern Indiana as a whole. Well done!
