To spread them apart you will need to use very hot water or they may break.

Just like when you're prepping fingernails to play guitar, after filing you should use 600 grit sandpaper to polish these to a very smooth finish. That eliminates a lot of the scratchiness. But having a consistent attack on the correct part of the "nail" is important too, and that just takes practice practice practice. Even if you are not interested in classical guitar, I recommend taking some classical guitar lessons from a good teacher. It will teach you solid right hand technique, including consistent attack. A good right hand is fundamental to fingerstyle playing.Also the Delrin model of this is likely to be a little less scratchy sounding than the poly model. Try them both and see what works best for you.
