Q: What is the length of the bottom compartment? Is it the full 35"? Would a 32" item fit inside it?

Yes, and keep in mind that if you have an item that is just a 'bit' too long- you can 'cant' it a little to the 'diagonal' so in essence you probably could fit something that is not too wide but a little longer than the full 35" length. I used this luggage to transport a lot of work equipment - it worked great and has not had any failures to date. The bottom of the bag can be fully exposed when you open up the bottom compartment/zipper. Hope this answer helps you!

Q: Can you carry-on the 26inch duffel?

No...most airlines follow the 22 x 18 x 10 carry on policy. The bag is 26 x 14 x 14.

Q: Does this piece of luggage qualify as a carry on? Or must it be checked.

Definitely not carry on. It's way too big for the overhead bin.

Q: Can you put a lock on the main compartment?

Yes, but think twice about purchasing this. I purchased one for my son in early '17 and one of the side zippers broke on the very first roundtrip use. Since I purposely paid more for what I thought was a better-built product, I was surprised when this happened.
