The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: 2 Fuzzy, 2 Furious Paperback

Fantastic book that my son loved. My husband and I also read it. Squirrel Girl is Awesome.

Als großer Fan der Comics um die unwahrscheinliche Marvel-Superheldin Squirrel Girl, habe ich auch zu ihrer Buchreihe gegriffen. Diese ist zwar eher für jüngere Kinder konzipiert, da es die Bücher aber nur in englischer Sprache gibt, gleicht das den „Schwierigkeitsgrad“ etwas an.2 Fuzzy, 2 Furious ist der zweite Teil der Buchreihe – lässt sich aber auch so lesen.Story:Doreen Green ist 14, hat Stress mit einer Lehrerin und ist sozial etwas unsicher – auch mit ihrer besten Freundin. Probleme, die sie leicht ablegen kann sobald sie ihren Hoody aufsetzt und den buschigen Eichhörnchen-Schwanz aus der Hose packt. Dann ist sie Squirrel Girl und sie ist unschlagbar!Ärger wächst wie ein Eichenbaum in ihrem kleinen Örtchen Shady Oaks, als eine neue Mall eröffnet werden soll. Die Mall veranstaltet einen Wettbewerb, welches Maskottchen sie wählen sollen und verspricht Preise für das Team, dessen Maskottchen gewinnt.Schon bald gerät die Situation außer Kontrolle. Was steckt dahinter?Meine Meinung:Ich mag die Figur Squirrel Girl einfach. Ihren grenzenlosen Optimismus, ihre Loyalität zu ihren Freunden und ihre Cleverness. Und wenn‘s darauf ankommt: sie macht alle Gegner platt, schließlich ist sie „The UNBEATABLE Squirrel Girl“.Schön fand ich die im Buch geschlagenen Querverweise und Anspielungen zu der Comicreihe „The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl“ von Autor Ryan North und Zeichnerin Erica Handerson – extrem empfehlenswert meiner Ansicht nach. (Wenn ihr die Comics nicht kennt, gebt wenigstens dem ersten Band mal ‘ne Chance.) Die Bücher und die Comics können zwar keinesfalls in derselben Kontinuität spielen, trotzdem machen diese kleinen Anspielungen Spaß.Ein paar Konflikte waren etwas sehr teenie-dramatisch, aber die handelnden Figuren sind halt größtenteils Teens – insofern passt das ja.Fazit:Cooles Buch. Ich bin absolut nicht die Zielgruppe, fand es aber trotzdem nett. Das liegt vermutlich hauptsächlich an der Heldin Squirrel Girl, die einfach eine positive Energie ausstrahlt und die hier vor allem an ihren Kommunikations-Skills arbeitet.Sie präsentiert in „2 Fuzzy, 2 Furious“ nicht die breite Palette an unorthodoxen Problemlösungsstrategien, die sie in den Comics an den Tag legt, aber sie arbeitet daran – hier im Buch ist sie außerdem noch etwas jünger.Wie gesagt: diese Bücher und die Comics können keinesfalls in derselben Kontinuität spielen – das erkennt der geneigte Fan an mehreren kleinen Details. Macht aber alles auf seine eigene Art Spaß.2 Fuzzy, 2 Furious kann jeder mit ein wenig Schulenglisch verstehen und zur Not ein paar Vokabeln nachschlagen. Der Schreibstil richtet sich eher an jüngere Leserinnen – passt aber.You go get them, Squirrel!

If you enjoyed the first Squirrel Girl novel, I'm pleased to say that this one is more than the same. Although the story stands alone pretty well, you'll probably enjoy it more if you read the first book first. It also helps to have a bit of a background knowledge of Marvel comics, as there are a lot of nods towards other titles. However, I think that if you've watched all of the recent movies you'll still get most of the jokes.Its a breezy read that makes light of a lot of super hero tropes, as Doreen learns to cope with the increasing pressure of her popularity. Although the Squirrel Scouts are hungry for action, Doreen is sure that there is a better way to deal with villains and her attempts to reason with them provide some of the novel's most entertaining moments. The foot notes and text chains are still a nice addition to this series, providing a lot of moments that are laugh-out-loud funny.The story this time is told from the perspective of Squirrel Girl, Ana Sofia and the villain in third person, and Tippy Toe in first person (though I'm not entirely sure why this is). While this is more narrators than I normally like to see, it was always easy to tell which was talking because they had very different voices. The plot itself was perhaps a little less engrossing than the original, but it is certainly very entertaining. It takes something that seems pretty mundane at a glance (the opening of a mall) and turns it into an adventure worthy of the Avengers.Yet its the characters that really sell the story. Doreen gets a lot of character development in this instalment as she gradually learns how to become a good friend, learning the importance of listening and respecting others feelings. I really love the scene in which Ana Sofia opens up to her about her disability, as this was a great example of how to understand and communicate with someone who is very different to yourself.However, while the villain was surprisingly creepy in this instalment, I did find them to be a bit forgettable on the whole. Without spoiling too much, I felt that they didn't seem to have much of a plan and their motivation was never really given.Still, all in all, this is a great adaptation of the comics and is really enjoyable to read. I would certainly recommend it to all young Marvel fans.

This book has a relatable young-teen protagonist. I read it to my 4 year old, who is in love with the Squirrel girl character. This is an excellent sequel to the first book. Squirrel girl is the ideal "gateway" hero; a hero who's wholesome, energetic, and endearingly optimistic. She's got a great, bubbly, optimistic personality that shines through with the hilarious footnotes and writing that can only come from true lovers of words. SG (Squirrel girl) has themes of inclusivity, friendship, and appropriate escalation, as well as protecting the innocent and being who you were meant to be. Seriously cannot praise this book enough! Smiled through the whole thing. The Dales have brought to life a character who is adorably awkward and, as I said, completely relatable to the middle school crowd (and younger!) LOVE LOVE LOVE! can't wait for #3!

Hilarious. Perfect sequel to the first novel. Very on point characteristic of Doreen and other superheroes.
