The Gate House

Long conversations.
Its exciting but the conversations keep repeating the same context over and over so at times I had to speed read considering the length of the story.

DISAPPOINTING & BORING
I have read the majority of books by this writer and enjoyed most of them including the Gold Coast. However, two thirds of the way through this book I am still waiting for something to happen - it is soooo boring! We know from the end of the Gold Coast book what Susan Sutter did to her Mafia don lover - so why on nearly every couple of pages in this book do we have to be reminded that John's ex-wife "whacked" "killed" "shot" or " murdered" the said man. Can someone please count how many times this is mentioned throughout the book. We are also constantly reminded how John does not get along with his former parents-in-law - yawn, yawn. I've still a third of it to read so may be it will perk up a bit before I read - THE END!!

ENJOY THE SLOW BURN
This is the sequel to "Gold Coast" in which Mafia don Frank Bellarossa got himself killed because he thought he was tougher and smarter than a New York lawyer. In "The Gate House", Frank's son comes looking for revenge. I guess some people never learn. "Gold Coast" was probably DeMille's best novel and "The Gate House" is not far behind. If your attention span demands a shoot-out every couple of pages don't bother to read this book but others will enjoy the writing, the humour and the slow build of tension.

Perfect Follow-Up To The "Gold Coast"
Truly, one of my favorite authors with "Word Of Honor" and "The Charm School" close to the top of the list of his many stories told. I remember chuckling through the "GoldCoast at John Sutter's insight to life. The same can be said about him in the "Gate House" as John deals with everyday and what's become a complicated life for him.A perfect description of life in Long Island's North Shore where hign incomes are still rampant and houses still too highly priced while the rest of the world watches from under a recessionary tent....a great read with a comfortable and deserving ending.

Back on form after "Wild Fire"
I think DeMille is great, although I was a little disappointed in his previous book "Wild Fire", and the book to which this is a sequel, "Gold Coast" was very slow-moving.Here, though, he's right back on form. The in-law jokes come thick and fast, while the sense of menace is sustained throughout until the final confrontation, which is maybe a little more predictable than some of DeMille's other novels but still works. I never quite figured out the significance of the Iranian though, and maybe there isn't any.

Like it!
I liked this book a lot! The lead character John Sutter is likeable. I am not sure if he has been in any other Nelson DeMille books - it is not actually a murder/thriller - even has a love story throughout the book. Worth a read!
