Worth the wait
I've been checking for the release of this book for months now. While I think it has a slightly less visual tutorial feel than some of the others, the advice and the illustrations are inspiring and innovative. It goes beyond the basic perspective guide, and Mario's work is just... wow!Like the other books in the series this book is perfectly formatted to carry with you, but the paper quality and printing are still a lovely quality for a small book. I'm excited to put some of Mario's tips into action.

One of the best in this series
I have purchased and read all of the series that this book fits into. This is one of my favorites, with a unique perspective – Ha – on sketching panoramas and vertical views. As usual, plenty of examples and illustrations and helpful commentary.

Are you interested in Unexpected Perspectives?
Mário Linhares, designer, urban sketcher, and arts educator presents his book "The Urban Sketching Handbook Panoramas and Vertical Vistas. Techniques for Drawing on Location from Unexpected Perspectives" which is one from the "Urban Sketching Handbook" series published by Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry. The book is divided into seven section which cover: 1) Art Materials, 2) A Visual Perspective, 3) Learning from the Masters, 4) Panorama Views, 5) Vertical Vistas, 6) Architecture, and 7) Taking it Further. The book is very thorough in the number of paintings presented but also since Linhares is commenting, not only his own paintings but also that of others or adding their comments to the sketchings which they did. It also lists the materials used for the specific paintings and includes tips and a list of contributors. The books goal is to offer "a bounty of lessons, tips, and techniques for sketching on location for everyone venturing to pick up a pencil and capture their world" (p. 4). This is not a step-by-step guide but the book gives the main ideas how to sketch panoramas and vertical vistas. I highly recommend it for advanced artists but it can also give beginners ideas what to look for.The complimentary copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley free of charge. I was under no obligation to offer a positive review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.#TheUrbanSketchingHandbookPanoramasAndVerticalVistas #NetGalley

How do I do that?
Remember the time you tried to sketch a scene and cluttered it up with lines and colors that made no sense?Remember how you tried to capture a vista and the perspective was so off that you threw it out?Ah, whether you're starting on urban sketching or beginning to master the basics and intermediate stages, this book will provide clear direction for the next level. Recommended to those who want to see and record - and to those who wonder what makes one sketch come alive and the other fall flat.

A must! For urban sketchers and wannabes alike :)
Let me start with a disclaimer: I'm no urban sketcher, I'm the other kind - the wannabe. Now, being the eternal wannabe, I've read my share of books about drawing, sketching, urban sketching, graphic journaling, you name it. That's why I feel 100% confident to tell you this book is GREAT for both kinds of readers (or sketchers).Mário Linhares has his own skill to make everything feel simple and intuitive, without falling into the superficial nor making you feel really ignorant. This book flows in a way that takes you on a journey. Literally, given the amazing examples included, but also one of personal growth. It's like you move from topic to topic stacking simple skills, one over the other, effortlessly becoming more competent. You really have to read the book and you'll know right away what I mean.If you're a wannabe, you'll learn heaps about looking and seeing, about the way to start a complex drawing, about feeling the scene. If you're an accomplished urban sketcher, you'll hone the fine art of landscaping - not one to be taken for granted. If you're on the fence about adding this book to your Urban Sketching Collection, go ahead, you won't be sorry.

inferior book of this series: serious failure by publisher trying to cut costs
this book has no double thick cover as the others in the series do [cheap md weight cover stock only].It has no elastic to hold the pages of the book closed as all the others in this series do [a cheapening move by publisher].And pathetic planning on publisher's part, which is QUARRY Publishing Co, is that the ink is light gray instead of black [to save more money]the leading of the lines is too close together and on some pages the font needs a magnifying glass it is so small. Fail, fail, failFor some reason several pages in the book are cut shorter than others, vertically, with parts of drawings chopped off. Amazing that a publisher like QUARRY has no quality controlAnd, the height of the book is shorter than all the other books in the series, again, saving paper by making this otherwise good author, Mário Linhares' book not be part of a matching set.Dont understand a big publisher going cheap [did you really think readers/ artists wouldnt notice? really?], but also design-wise, failing to follow Quarry's own previous designs, sizes, features and instead giving a second rate book that is unacceptable as part of what once was a great series in looks and feel and content for the most part.

Did I get a knock off?
This review is not on the author or content. I have all of the urban sketching handbooks. I enjoy them. But this book is physically inferior to the rest. Cheap thin cover and binding no elastic band. I wonder if this is even an authentic copy... if it is,shame on the publisher. If it's a knock off that I just paid for, shame on Amazon. One of the other books in this series I also bought on Amazon is missing its elastic but is still the same quality as the others. This book however is so disappointing in its quality of construction that I'm concerned its not authentic... the content and author is excellent however.

An excellent addition to this urban sketching series
First, a couple of notes about the physical book. 1. Unlike the previous books in this series, the binding for Panoramas and Vertical Vistas is paperback rather than flexibound and there's no elastic to hold the covers closed. This in no way diminishes the content of the book, but is worth noting if you're collecting the complete series. It also makes the book a little less durable. 2. The other thing that distinguishes this book from others in the series is the number of fold-out pages. These are necessary to accommodate examples of extreme panorama or vertical formats and allow them to be viewed at a useful size within what is a relatively small book. The leading edges of these fold-out pages extend right to the gutter of the book and need to be unfolded and refolded with care. (It's also easy to miss them at first.) Interestingly, the folds are not flush with the other page edges but noticeably inset, making me wonder if this is a binding/trimming error and that perhaps the folds should have been flush and the leading edges not so tightly tucked into the gutter.Given that the book is part of a series, it was nice that it didn't dwell excessively on the matter of art supplies or basic theory but directed readers elsewhere if that info was needed (e.g. perspective). There's an interesting and useful introductory section on theories of visual perception and how that relates to extreme scale – very wide or very tall subjects. I appreciated the examples demonstrating a wide range of styles from a variety of contributors and also the sometimes unexpected examples of the panoramic concept – not all panoramas necessarily have to be landscapes and it was refreshing to be reminded of this.Perhaps a little more discussion could have been devoted to the matter of distorted perspective techniques: there are examples of these (e.g. by Lapin), but not a lot of guidance on how to achieve them successfully, and even Stephanie Bower's book on Perspective for this series doesn't spend a lot of time on these extreme or distorted perspective techniques.Overall, an excellent and well-put together addition to the series and one that doesn't (unlike some of its companions) duplicate too much basic or introductory content but delves right into its theme.
