Quality design, materials, workmanship, and manual
I bought this to hang my Thule Force XT Large roof box in the carport. The roof box is great but I didn't get the Thule hoist because it seems cheap and flimsy compared to the Harken and costs more. My carport roof is 13 ft so I bought the 16 ft/90 lb version to be sure I had enough rope to lower the cargo box to the floor. The ropes, pulleys, and block and tackle are high quality and come fully assembled. You just have to get the organizer located correctly and then everything goes together. Harken's manual is unusually good quality paper and photos and clear complete descriptions of each step. Nevertheless, on my first attempt I failed to understand why Distance 2 has to be greater than Distance 3 (you'll understand when you look at the manual more carefully than I did) and didn't get enough lift to lower the box to the floor. After some head scratching the light came on and I relocated the organizer and everything worked fine. I made a 10 inch cleat to tie off the excess line and attached it to the wall at about waist height. I'm pleased with the operation of the hoist mechanism, it's like marine quality and reminded me of sailboat rigging. I was delighted to discover that the reason it looked familiar is that I used to buy Harken rigging and tackle when I had a boat. I recommend this hoist, buy it and you won't be disappointed.
