Q: What is the granule size on this? I am looking for lava 1/4" and less. Is this much larger?

The granules vary quite a bit in shape. Some are rounder and some are more elongated. Some of mine are about 1/4" wide and at least 1/2" long. A 1/4" screen would probably sift out the longer pieces, but you would only have about one-third of the material left.

Q: Will this work in a smoker? My smoker came with a very small granule. Thanks, Jay.

Hi Jay, These granules are strictly for looks. We use them in our gas fireplace that we recently converted. I do not believe they are intended to be cooked over. Kay
