Nice looking, but fragile
The material and stitching appear quite sturdy, but the clasps where low quality and broke quickly.

6 year use
I had purchased this bag in may of 2013 6 years agoI would say that this bag is indeed worth the money i paid for it as1. I used it 5 days a week for 2 semesters a year for 6 years to carry 2 large text books and a laptop along with standard lined paper spiral notebook2. On several occasions hiking up a mountain where i kept water and some small camera equipment.3. Other uses just to carry stuff in as i was running errands if i needed it. once or twice when out with friends we would put snacks in it and go see a movie. The bag held up very well but i did notice a few things that came up and some that persisted.1. On the strap there is one adjustable side and the other side only has one metal rectangle piece. While the adjustable side never game me issues (i believe because it had support from the adjustable piece) the non-adjustable side the piece that connected the leather piece of the bag to the canvas strap would always always always turn sideways. its about 2 inches or so long and its smaller side is 1/2 of an inch long so it would pinch the material into that smaller space. Over time this would end up cutting the canvas and 2 times the strap broke on me and i had to repair it i think this could easily be fixed by adding an adjustable piece on that side as well and it should take care of that problem.2. the buckles on the front they are cast pieces and as such feel like it. I noticed that over the first 3 years there was some minor bending so the 2 sides didnt line up correctly which made putting the buckle back on one handed a little difficult but it did not effect opening the buckle one handed. they feel alittle light but will generally hold up over time. only of mine broke after 4 years and that was after i tried bending it back into proper shape.3. When i got the bag it was just as it was in the picture a nice dark colored bag. Now this may be just because how much i used it and how often i was outside with it as the same thing tends to happen to my hats but it will most certainly fade over time as of writing this reveiw it has gone from the dark brown color and settled into a light beige canvas with the shoulder strap taking on an orange color. the leather on the other hand does not seem to have faded at all really maybe just because its on the bottom.4. The stiches held up really well none of them frayed or came loose over time, I am happy with how they held up over the last 6 years. If i had to I would most certainly buy this bag again and get another good 6 years out of it.

Nice looking, roomy bag, but padding is lacking
This is a good looking bag. Mostly canvas with some leather trim. Roomy with good sized and good number of pockets. It's also very sturdy.Overall, I'm happy with it, but two things that could be improved. Both come down to padding:1) The padding on the strap is pretty useless. If you put any amount of heavy stuff in the bag, it doesn't offer any protection.2) It's listed as a laptop bag and I bought it for that reason, but the inside padding is almost non-existent. A laptop bag should at least have padding on the bottom for when you put it down. This one has none. I actually used the foam from the packing material for this. It's a hack, but it works. But I shouldn't have to do this.I would give it a 3 1/2 because of these two, but since I use it everyday, like how it looks, and like it's quality, I'll round up to 4.

The bag itself seems quality however I can't believe it has such terrible fastening clips given the quality of the bag
I just started using my bag. Previously I was using my client's bags. I set it down on my desk and the fastening clip broke. I did not even try to open the bag. I could see if I used the bag constantly, taking it on planes, etc. I literally started using the bag on 12/5/16 and on 12/6/16 it broke. It broke when I put it on my desk which was odd. The bag itself seems quality however I can't believe it has such terrible fastening clips given the quality of the bag. I guess I should have spent more than $42. I would not purchase the bag.....

So far, so good.
I have found that Rothco products are hit or miss - they make a lot of stuff, and luckily for me I seem to have gotten some good deals - and this bag is no exception. I have had it now for several weeks, and I have been using it every day to carry things to and from work - papers, portfolios, Kindle, my lunch, umbrella, and other misc stuff, nothing too crazy (it sounds like others have been loading it down with heavier stuff though). The quality of the bag surprised me - the stitching seems to be tight, the leather is surprisingly nice, and the canvas seems tough. The weight is good too, not too heavy. I do have some minor concerns about the clasps - they are sort of awkward to open and close for me, but maybe that's just my perception. Side pocket is a little small, but it is a good size for little items (perfect size for my Altoids survival tin!). Honestly, I am pretty happy with the overall purchase. For $40 or so you really can't go wrong, at least for the bag that I got. It sounds like some others might have gotten some poor quality control or something though.
