Q: Would the mallet side be usable on timpani?

They mallet sides are very small diameter. You can use them, but they will be very staccato and not project much.

Are you serious? You really think they would sell you 1 stick….?? Sheesh Dood. Maybe you don’t deserve to buy Vic Firth? They are the best brand - hands down! And they only ever sell high quality, premium sticks and mallets - IN PAIRS!!! …..jus sayin

Q: what is the diameter of the felt side?

The felt ball is 1" in diameter and is quite firm. If you're using these for cymbal effects, crescendo's or swells, they will work, but the impact of the felt heads will be heard at the quieter parts of the roll. Yarn mallets would probably be better. But, if you will be using these on toms they provide good rebound (bounce) while creating a softer more nuanced tom sound. Hope this helps
